I was originally very impressed with this product. The lamp was VERY bright, the radio worked well and it charged my iPhone up every night. I was happy.

But after a short time I started to notice a few things going wrong. Everytime I plugged my iPhone in it started the iPod playing. So everytime I had to quickly access the iPhone menu and stop the music before it woke the wife up. This is very annoying.

I then found that I was sleeping in late. Originally I thought this was just me and then I thought I was forgetting to set the alarm volume on the product. Until one night, for no reason at all, the volume level appeared on the display and then it counted down until it was at zero volume level. Very odd. I reset the volume back up to 10 but the clock just reset it to zero again. This then developed into all the electric bits going haywire and doing what they liked. There was clearly a big problem with this product making the alarm clock feature useless.

Well Amazon have been 100% efficient and helpful and did not hesitate in helping to replace the product. I had a new one arrive just 2 days after I told them. An excellent customer service experience!!! Thank you Amazon :)

I will keep a close eye on this one to see if there is a common product problem and I will let you know what happens. My first observation is that putting the iPhone in the dock still sets off the iPod feature and starts playing music automatically. So this is still a problem. Fingers crossed....

I am very happy with my lamp. The design is great, it looks very nice in the bed side table. Light comes out a bit yellow, but it really wakes you up; I just had to raise it a bit over the height where my head rests on the pillow; it is also more effective when you have it close to you (40-50cm). No problems with the radio, just have to fiddle a little with the antennae to get a good signal. Excellent to recharge your ipod during the night and wake up with your favorite tunes; the drums option make a good substitute when necessary. The sound is nothing spectacular, but it is enough for me while I get ready in the morning. I have not used the sleep option.

Firstly, did not buy from Amazon so no grudges there. Just want to warn people not to buy this from anywhere. I bought it for my wife for Xmas 2009 and now the radio started to turn itself on and off at random. Very annoying when it happened after midnight for the first time. We have tried to reset it by unplugging it but this did not help. Search engine reveals that there are many others experiencing the same problem.

We have not had problems with the lifetime of the lamp but this might be due to the fact that we ended up not using the lamp for wake-up function. The problem with this product is that the minimum time is 30 min and no matter how dim the light is, my wife starts waking up way too early before the music starts.

What makes me mad is that in a product like this it cannot be a software problem, can it? So it must be a faulty component that Philips bought from some Chinese supplier. It must have seemed like a good decision to buy from that supplier at the time but how expensive is it going to be when Philips have to replace every single unit?

Lamp failed after a few days, though ipod feature still worked. Apparently, many buyers have had same problem. It seems the product hs serious reliability problems - don't waste your money.

I have to clarify that i bought this item from boots not amazon, but in looking on amazon for a replacement thought i would leave my review here also to hopefully prevent anyone else making the same mistake!

My fiancee bought me this lamp for my birthday in March, I have just returned the third one - all with the same problem of the lamp failing.

The bulb cannot be changed, but should last for something ridiculous like 100,000 hours. None of the three lamps i have had has lasted for more than 6 weeks! The item itself is really good whilst it works, but so unreliable - i wonder if the people who have spoken positively about it have had it very long?

The other negative is that the ipod / iphone plays as soon as you put it in the dock, so you then have to navigate into itunes and pause it manually - every time!

I have bought this as a present for my significant other's birthday and it is brilliant, especially the iPOD functionality
However, less than 2 months in the bulb died so no more light.... and since it cannot be replaced (says product sheet) you just have to get a new one! (could be expensive when outside the 1-year warranty)
Under warranty so got a replacement very quickly (very impressive customer service on this one) but can't help but be worried about it happening again....
The only other slight criticism.. no wave sound to wake-up... this would have been my favourite... but you can download one and play it from your iPOD so solutions all around!

I bought the Philips New Wake Up Light Alarm HF3490 With IPod Dock because I had read some reviews about the benefits of being awaked with that increasing light. Though the price is really high for an alarm clock I thought that it would be worth it, and it really worked for a few days. The problem was that after less than two weeks the lamp did not work anymore and it was just like a big alarm clock with an iPod charger. Another problem is that you can't change the lamp for yourself.
Fortunately I bought it in Amazon, so I had no problem to get my money back.
Another thing about Philips: I wrote a similar review in their official webpage, and more than one month later they still say that there are no comments!

I bought this product in March 2010 and by November 2010 it had an electrical fault which rendered the unit useless. The wake-up light became very difficult to switch off, I have managed to turn the light off but it is now stuck on the off function so it does not show the time or function as a light. In a word useless. A total waste of money there are much cheaper versions out there such as the Lumie range (which I had for 3 years) and I advise getting one with both a dawn and dusk feature.

I bought this thinking it would be a great product but was very sorry I did and returned it. I have never written a product review before but this product has so many flaws I feel compelled to tell others not to buy it.

Serious Flaws:
- Whenever I plug my iPhone 3G into this device it instantly begins playing music requiring me to go to the screen and pause the player.
- Sometimes the iPhone complains that the device is not made for iPhone and asks me to put it into airplane mode to avoid interference. It does not do this every time and I have no idea why.
- When set to wake up via iPhone music it will only wake up if the time until the alarm goes off is short. So experiments with 15 minutes worked fine. I did not experiment to see exactly how long it would work but 6 hours was too long. Instead it would always play the alternative sound like bird chirping making the wake to my selection of music only good for a short nap.
- It only has one brightness setting. You can not set it to a dim mode at night before bed and then have it wake up to full light in the morning.
- The controls are not very easy to use. It is easy to hit the wrong selector and adjust the wrong thing.
- It broke after just 1 week of use! It was also not clear how to change the bulb inside.
- Pressing down on the snooze alarm would sometimes bounce it up into the OFF position leading to no replay of the alarm and possible oversleeping. I am often a two snoozer and not having a reliable snooze button is a non-starter for me.
- The speaker quality is quite poor.
- The light is not as bright as it should be even at full blast. Sleeping with this right next to my head wasn't bright enough to wake me.

I am looking for another product that does what this one should but have not found any. Philips, please revamp this product into one that WORKS and does not have these flaws!

The light is great, just what is needed early on in the mornings. Shame the radio doesn't tune at all, just hisses all the time. I wake up to the light, gentle birds and my Sony radio alarm for the news headlines! If you want a wake up light it is fine but if you want a radio forget it. iPod sounds ok but not perfect; a bit distorted.
