This review is from: Wise One (Audio CD)
Wise One, recorded February 2009, is a wonderful collection of standards (mostly Coltrane or Coltrane-associated compositions) from a quintet featuring Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Anthony Wilson on guitar, Joe Gilman on piano, Glenn Richman on double-bass, Eddie Marshall behind the drums. Hutcherson has always the central position, introducing themes and improvising, superbly interacting with the other musicians, guitarist Wilson shows his talent with inspired solos, piano-bass-drums are a solid and powerful rhythm sections with many brilliant moments. The result is not a routine Coltrane tribute, but a really passionate one, with many interesting ideas focusing on the more lyrical side of Coltrane, centered on moods that are always joyful, positive, heartening, cheering. As in the previous release (2007 For Sentimental Reasons) I feel that Hutcherson is playing for the fun of playing, totally unrestrained and relaxed. Again a great recorded sound from Swiss label Kind of Blue. Enjoy!
