5.0 out of 5 stars A Supernatural Classic
Previously shown on BBC in 2008 this is now available to buy on this dvd. As the previous reviewer said, this has been slightly edited and made into one showing, but the bits are still there in the deleted scenes section. Written by the great Mark Gatiss there was originally only one half hour story written, but the BBC said that they wanted something that was longer...

3.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series - but an edited dvd compilation
Let me first make it clear the 3 stars are for the dvd not the actual content - for that I would award 5 stars without hesitation. Written by Mark Gattis (League Of Gentlemen, Doctor Who) Crooked house tells 3 tales about Geap Manor a house seeped in mystery and death. Originally this was a 3 part series but what those idiots who put out the dvd have done have edited it...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Crooked House, 14 Dec 2009

This review is from: Crooked House [DVD] (DVD)
While this compendium of ghost stories is quite enjoyable, particularly the first two, it is not really in the same league as the BBC's M R James series from the 1970s with their slow burn suspense and awareness of every noise and character nuance.

The emphasis has shifted from the subtle approach that James favoured to more outright horror with an inevitable decline in effectiveness. James was about suggesting the worst which is far more successful than showing it because it allows the mind to do the rest. The ending of the second story is a prime example of this.

The BBC should go back to basics and the Jamesian countryside which played as big if not a bigger part than the characters.

2.0 out of 5 stars I kept waiting for the film to begin., 3 Feb 2014

I had read that it was a good horror story, and it started in the present day. One of the characters started recounting an old mystery associated with the artifact (door knocker), and that took about 45 minutes. Then there was another story, rather tedious. The culmination was really long-awaited ("Thank goodness something's finally happening!") and frankly not all that frightening simply because I had no connection to the victim (no plot development there) and by that time was so bored by the whole thing that I was just happy to switch it off.
My reaction could have been partly my fault since I did not understand that it was intended as three stand-alone episodes that had been telescoped together.
