A Great Alternative To Designer Arik Levy's Famous Doorstop, 25 Aug 2010
This is basically a rip-off of the Limited edition 'Bar Of Gold Doorstop' by Tel Aviv designer Arik Levy. But at under a fiver, and with Arik's original costing over £50 on-line at the Conran shop, it's hard to say which version the Rip-Off really is.
Ok - The original might be better quality and covered in real gold too, but to all intents and purposes you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference. This doorstop is a very good quality item, it feels satisfactorily weighty, and the gold outer looks incredibly convincing. The shine really does look like real gold - and too the touch it feels cold - it's plastic but at first I wasn't sure; the underside and base are clearly plastic, but the bit you actually see, I thought was some sort of coated metal. I had to inspect it really closely.
It comes in nice packaging too, so it will make a nice novelty gift for someone; it's no just delivered in a cardboard box, but a clear plastic box which displays the item on a black background with 'dazzling' gold graphics (they're kind of kitch, but that's part of the fun and it's intentional - I'm pretty sure it's intentional anyway).
The bar itself has little rubber feet which helps it grip shiny, uncarpeted surfaces such as wooden floors, laminate flooring, tiled floors and lino. And I suspect - if you're a fat cat or businessman - this item would look great (as the manufacturers and the box suggest) used as a paperweight on your desk.
After much umming and arghing (take a look at the above review's comments section) I decided to take the plunge and buy one of these doorstops. Will it hold the door open with the cats jumping all over it? Who knows - I'll come back for an update in a few weeks and let you know, but the overall weight, I would say and I'm guessing here , is about the same as your average bag of sugar - maybe a touch less.
However - after having just received my doorstop in the morning post at work I can tell you the look and feel is very convincing and for the price, I must say, this seems like a bargain. Put it this way: I know what everyone's getting in their stocking from me this Christmas.
**UPDATE**
In the end, I did have to combine this with another 'wedge style' doorstop - just for my own peace of mind. I didn't have any problems with the door shutting as such, but on one or two occasions, I'd come home from work and find that the door and doorstop had crept forward, leaving the door only half open.
I'm unsure if this was caused by the cats jumping all over the door, lack of traction on my shiny wooden floors, or a bit of both - in the end though, I didn't want to take the chance so added a wedge stop into the mix too. However, there would be no issue if I had carpeted floors, or didn't have cats and I'm still extremely happy with this product. I still thoroughly recommend it.

I bought this for my youngest son when he went to University. It looks great and is heavy enough to do the job - more lightweight novelty doorstops just don't hold the student room doors open.

Heavy and looks so real, 2 July 2010
I bought this as a gift for my father to stop his office door. He absolutely loves it. When you enter his office you see this huge heavy chunk of gold being used as a doorstopper it just makes you go "wow". It's quite heavy and will probably stop a heavy door. It is plastic, but very convincing, and the underside has rubber feet, so it wont slide away on wood, stone or tile.

I've bought this as a stocking filler for my lovely girlfriend for christmas. She could use it for many things like holding doors open, a paperweight or throwing at the kids when they're being a pain! It is a hefty piece indeed at 1kg! It looks fantastic and does look just like a bar of gold. I saw one once. . . .in a James Bond Movie! It has little rubber stoppers at each corner to aid door stoppage. It would look good on your desk at work too. A great novelty item indeed. I just hope she doesn't think it's real!
