Harry Nilsson was a curious artist; he rarely performed live, and went through periods of substance and alcohol abuse problems before dieing at the tragically early age of fifty-three, in January 1994. His peak recording period - from the late 1960s to the mid seventies - is covered here, in the Sony / BMG 'Original Album Classics' - five albums in minituarised reproductions of the original vinyl album covers. Of course, you don't get the original gatefold covers, and there are no sleeve notes, but if it's the music that you're after, you simply can't argue that these sets represent great value for money. The albums reveal Nilsson's great artistic range - from the soaring pop of his number one smash hit, a cover of Badfinger's 'Without You' (disgracefully violated by Mariah Carey, of course), on 'Nilsson Schmillson', through to the schmaltzy, but charming album of standards, 'A Little Touch of Schmilsson In The Night', and the awesome vocal gymnastics of 'Aerial Ballet', I can't possibly do anything but heartily recommend this collection - plus, there must be space for a 'Volume 2' featuring Nilsson's RCA albums such as his set of Randy Newman songs, and the soundtrack to 'The Point'. Lovely stuff.

For casual Nilsson fans who know him best through the hit singles "Without You" and "Everybodys Talkin'" here is a superb chance to purchase 5 of the mans best albums each with a collection of bonus tracks added to the original discs and all for the price of little more than one full album. The most famous album is "Nilsson Schmillson" which contains the aforementioned "Without You" as well as two other US hits the carribean flavoured "Coconut" and the all out 7 minute rocker "Jump in the Fire". This is probably the strongest overall disc but each of the other 4 have a multitude of pleasures. "A little touch of Schmillson in the night" is made up entirely of covers of 1940's songs done with a full orchestra and produced by Richard Perry. Not for everyday listening but late at night with a glass of wine relax and take in that voice. "Son Of Schmillson" was villified on release but contains some great tracks such as "Remember", "Joy" and "Take 54" as well as the hillarious "I'd Rather be Dead". The other 2 albums "Harry" and "Aerial Ballet" date from the late '60's and whilst showing their age slightly more still contain far more hits than misses - check out "One" or "Mournin' Glory Story".Overall superb value with nearly 100 tracks that contain the core of the man's best work. Later releases, excluding "Knilsson", whilst still interesting would not have the consistent song writing quality on display here.

Album excewllent value for the money.Nilsson was a superb song stylist,in particular 'A little touch of Schmilsson' shows off both the humour of Nilsson and that of Gordon Jenkins who provides the instrumental backing.

Harry Nilsson ought to be recognized for his Top 10-strong contributions to songwriting and singing in the popular music industry. Started out extremely multi-talented and with the sweetest voice ever heard on the radio in the 60's, ended as more or less a personal tragedy two decades later. This collection (5 studio recordings from the 60's and early 70's) is what I would call essential Nilsson. Great songwriting, great singing. Later releases (Pussy Cats with John Lennon, FlashHarry, Sandman and more) would be for fans only, while Original Album Classics cover what Harry Nilsson should be honored and remembered for.

just got this after watching the beeb programme on Harry - this set is absolutely fantastic - if you're a Beatles fan just BUY IT!! We all know Harry for "Everybody's Talkin'" (thank the Lord he didn't write that!) but, apart from "A Little Touch of...... (which is good if you like musicals as I do!) you can see Beatles (Penny Lane, Walrus) influences in a load of stuff - it also follows on as does Pepper and Brian Wilson's "Smile"(Beach Boys and Randy Newman influences as well) you'd be nuts not to buy this at this price! OK packaging is c**p but you want to read about him or listen?? "Without you" in Spanish had me in tears, "Little Cowboy" made me laugh - up to you but,Harry you were a star - R.I.P. love you loads xxxxxx
