5.0 out of 5 stars Three Classy Decades
This is a cracking bargain: 40 Ellington numbers spanning 30 years of composition & performance from 1928-58, over 2 cds. Overall the digital remastering works well, though the limitations of the earlier pieces are obviously heard, but the energy and invention throughout dispels any reservations. Almost all the classics are here, and you can enjoy the electricity of them...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not my scene
Not my taste! Disappointed with the recording quality. Sadly it will be in the car boot sale! My fault for not reviewing it before purchase

This is a cracking bargain: 40 Ellington numbers spanning 30 years of composition & performance from 1928-58, over 2 cds. Overall the digital remastering works well, though the limitations of the earlier pieces are obviously heard, but the energy and invention throughout dispels any reservations. Almost all the classics are here, and you can enjoy the electricity of them on the Amazon sampler.

Although the majority of the tracks come in around the 3 minute mark, we're also treated to three substantial tracks around the 8 minute mark, which really allows the piece to spread its wings, and for us to marvel at both composition and performance. Lovely, joyful jazz throughout, deceptively effortless and melodically memorable. At some mouth-wateringly bargain prices on the Amazon site, this should be snapped up without delay.

This 2 CD set is presented as a chronological career retrospective covering the period 1927 to 1958 and includes many defining performances from the period. The 40 selections are divided into Disc 1 covering 1928 to 1937 and Disc 2 covering 1938 to 1958. Both the recording techniques and style of performance change dramatically from one disc to the other. Virtually all the performances included are Ellington compositions and so the review is of both composition and performance. The liner notes by Peter Gamble also include personnel details for the recordings but you will need a magnifying glass to read them as the print is very small. The running times are approx 60 and 78 minutes respectively. This set both looks good in its packaging and has very good sound quality throughout.
