4.0 out of 5 stars Mark 2 - 3 months old!
I reviewed Live in Denmark 1972 (brilliant album) and started off by saying something about the 60's; peace and love. Well, the archive collection has come up with this gem of an album, what a find! For those of us who love Deep Purple (and let's be honest mark 2 were easily the most prolific and best version), we know mark 1 faltered to a halt in early summer 1969...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sound quality
It would have been nice if the description here for this item had mentioned this is (as honestly stated in the actual sleeve notes, but by then it's a little late...) recorded direct from the PA mixer desk stereo output, with a mix that is of course tailored entirely to suit the PA (and the building acoustics) - in 1969 quality - and is in no way balanced for the tape...

This review is from: Live in Montreux 1969 (Audio CD)
I reviewed Live in Denmark 1972 (brilliant album) and started off by saying something about the 60's; peace and love. Well, the archive collection has come up with this gem of an album, what a find! For those of us who love Deep Purple (and let's be honest mark 2 were easily the most prolific and best version), we know mark 1 faltered to a halt in early summer 1969. Blackmore, Lord and Paice found the PERFECT replacements in Gillan and Glover. They first started rehearsing/jamming/writing together around July 1969.

Just over 3 months later in October; they played at the Montreux Casino (yes, the one burned down and referred to in Smoke...). This album is a 2 disc recording of the 1969 gig. They are fresh, they are experimenting, there is evidence of a real respect between all 5 musicians. Even after 3 months they had written (and completed) the classic "Child in Time", albeit played slightly tentatively. They play a very early version of "Speed King", so early in fact it is called "Kneel and Pray" (a bit of a mouthful, in comparison!!!) But listening to Gillan's voice when it was still young and fresh is wonderful.

The interplay between Lord and Blackmore is evident throughout this album, they tease, the mimic, they inspire, they effortlessly motivate the whole band. Remember, this album is 5 musicians who have only been together a few weeks and are already writing (what would become) classic rock songs! The album offers numerous highlights and provides clear evidence of what the future would hold these young men.

Buy this album, listen and be amazed at how superbly they raise their game; either playing solos/improvisations or "backing" the others in the band.
A final "warning" - the clarity of the CD isn't 21st century!

Suggest do not expect too much. I don't have the urge to sue anybody, but suspect I will never listen to it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic DEEP PURPLE Mk2 Concert !!!!!!!!!!!!, 16 April 2011
This review is from: Live in Montreux 1969 (Audio CD)
DEEP PURPLE were absolutely amazing at this point in there career. Playing completely storming concerts of progressive hard rock. BLACKMORE/GILLAN/GLOVER/LORD/PAICE were the best live band on the face of the earth ! Improvisation, solos, extended songs, FANTASTIC ! This is the Montreux concert that beats all others. The real Deep Purple, Mk2 playing in Switzerland where they recorded the CLASSIC 'MACHINE HEAD' album with 'SMOKE ON THE WATER', the No.1 Guitar riff, 2 years later !
