5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Yes!!!, 25 Jun 2011
This review is from: Metropolitan (MP3 Download)
Lived with this album for about a week now, and starting to get it. Basically it's brilliant. Very infectious. You will have these tunes going round your head for ages, but that's ok, because they are beautiful, and I wouldn't want to miss them. I started with 'Voodoo Chic' some years back and loved it, then listened to 'How to steal the world', but that took a break and coming back to to get it. Like I say, this one took me about a week. This is classy stuff that you won't find many other places. Highly recommended.

Five DANCING Stars!! Scotland's innovative singer/lyricist/musician Helicopter Girl (aka Jackie Joyce of Mouth Music) releases her third blazing, mega-tracked studio recording, "Metropolitan", since her sensational Mercury Music Prize-nominated How to Steal the World. Basically, it's hot mesmerizing dance music stuffed with lyrics that cover a multitude of current event & inter-personal relations topics, all coming at the listener/dancer non-stop and uncompromisingly, but absolutely squeaky clean. With Jackie, it's all about the insistent & interesting beats, lush beautiful bridges, the edgy arrangements, and the 'heavy' lyrical concepts. The CD is full of varied somewhat trip-hop dance rhythms but defying category and pushing the envelope: it's the perfect stuff for house parties, dance clubs (where "It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This" has been a huge club hit), mood listening, or just interesting background music as Helicopter Girl delivers the goods with an elegant, calm, somewhat husky and seductive voice that alternates between being soothing, edgy, and sometimes almost sinister, but always interesting and assured. The best tracks are "Giants Building Giants", "Blink", "Ballerina" (a popular video), "Whatever Happened To The Hero", "Alien for Breakfast" (seriously!), the change-of-pace and bluesy "The Things You Do For Love", and the dance hit "It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This". The tracks all vary from 3 to 4 minutes: obviously meant for looping at dances. Highly Recommended for house, chill, trip-hop, and electronica fans, and the adventurous listener. Helicopter Girl's "Metropolitan" is amazing. Let the remixes begin!! Five MESMERIZING Stars!! (This review is based on a 12 track iTunes digital download.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, 26 Jun 2008
This review is from: Metropolitan (Audio CD)
After enjoying her first album and missing out on the second I wasn't too sure what to expect from her third, a good 8 years after her debut. What I did get was a rather dancey collection of cracking songs - worth a listen even if you've never heard of the dusky voiced scottish girl.

I would recommend this album to everyone.
Unfortunately, I was not in the UK when this came out originally but for that it looses nothing and I cannot belive that she was not more successful with that voice.
