5.0 out of 5 stars Shania review
As a massive fan of ALL of Shania's work i find this album somewhat harder to enjoy partly because i know that this album was not released by her or her true representatives and was a money making excuse for others, however there is some very good song on here for example two hearts one love will get stuck in your head just as well as parts from her come on over album...

3.0 out of 5 stars ...so how didn't it work then...
So how didn't it work then? You had Eileen Twain, who a few years later would become the biggest selling female artist in the Galaxy, and you had AOR god Paul Sabu who has worked on fourteen platinum selling albums for the likes of David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Madonna and John Waite, as well as his priceless AOR work in his won band, Only Child, and such hidden gems as...

Not a bad album but not up to her near impossibly high level however better than most.

So how didn't it work then? You had Eileen Twain, who a few years later would become the biggest selling female artist in the Galaxy, and you had AOR god Paul Sabu who has worked on fourteen platinum selling albums for the likes of David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Madonna and John Waite, as well as his priceless AOR work in his won band, Only Child, and such hidden gems as Alexa and Silent Rage.

The material has been out in a few formats including "Beginnings", "The Limelight Sessions" and "Wild And Wicked", but this version seems to have the most tracks with eighteen songs making an appearance. It seems to be Only Child who were responsible for the backing tracks, and with Paul Sabu working with the Metal Queen, Lee Aaron, at the time, this is firmly rooted in AOR, rather than the country pop Shania became famous with. Which may be why most of her country fans turn nasty when presented with these demos.

But if you think of it another Paul Sabu project, then it all makes much more sense. After all, as well as his work with Lee Aaron, he was also writing and producing for Alexa and Precious Metal around this time. And despite it's demo nature, these songs (mainly Sabu / Twain co-writes) have held up well. Although most of the songs are pure AOR, there are a few harder rocking tunes that give an indication of what might have been, had they been picked up, turning Shania into a rock chick. Grrr.

Ms Twains voice is almost fully developed, and there's no doubting what a great singer she can be. The only real flaw is the very pedestrian percussion, and that's the only place you can really pick up on the fact that these were demos to be shopped around record labels, rather than finished recordings. Regardless, there are still a few AOR gems dotted around the album including 'The Heart Is Blind' and '(Don't Gimme That) Once Over'. Some of the poppier, dance tunes are a bit hard to take, but this is actually worth listening to.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Retro?, 3 Jun 2005

This review is from: Send It With Love (Audio CD)
In an earlier review of Vanessa Williams' "Everlasting Love", I called for the retro craze to step up to the big eighties. I should have specified that I meant bringing back existing eighties songs, not singing new ones.
As a fan of 70s/80s music, I thought this was a good album, or would have been if it had been released in the late 80s or early 90s. This album was plucked from its cozy time capsule and dressed up a little, but still sounds like something you'd expect from Heart, Toto, Expose or maybe Foreigner. Her cover of "Half Breed" is comparable to the Cher rendition, and there are fifteen songs that she co-wrote with Paul Sabu before she became famous.
With the backing of an 80s metal band, you can feel your hair growing and your jeans turning into spandex as you go through the album, but in the present decade it just doesn't feel right.
Having firmly established herself as a Country/Pop crossover diva, this album does nothing for Shania Twain musically, but is of interest as a snapshot of where she was before she got where she is now.
