5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, 16 Dec 2011
This review is from: Nola (Audio CD)
There's not much you can say about this album apart from the fact that it truly wicked, it took the best part of 20 years to write this album and get it released, it was worth the effort for sure.

Love it

5.0 out of 5 stars PANTERA, SLAYER NOTHING COMPARED TO DOWN, 9 April 2003
This review is from: Nola (Audio CD)
downs first and best album, nola, is a brilliant display of what heavy metal is all about. From the dramatic guitar soloing and heavy riffs to the heavy thumping of the drums, but DOWN gets their distinct sound from phil anselmos singing, he done it with panters and superjoint ritual and now hes done it again with down. The album has no bad tracks and it has one of hte best song i think ever to be written from a heavy metal group, stone the crow is the best song by far on this album and it is a slow song to.BUT ENOUGH OF ME TALKING CAUSE IM AWAY TO LISTEN TO DOWN AND SO SHOULD YOU, AND YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED SO GO AND BUY THE CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Years on, it still impresses me., 14 Aug 2006

Yes, this album is exceptional, Down, a metal supergroup formed from bandmembers of Pantera, Corrosion of Confromity, Crowbar and Superjoint Ritual, is brilliantly put together album, the very raw sound of this album never fails, right through to the last track. You know it is going to be a brilliant album, once you've listened to that amazing first track, 'Temptations Wings', that riff is so powerful. Lifer is another track which dosen't dissapoint. Anselmo's vocals just don't dimmer at all throughout the entire album.

The number one standout track is definately 'Stone The Crow', no doubt about that. It is mellower than many of the other, but does not sacrifice any of Downs ability with that mellowness. Pepper Keenan is at his best in that track, which surely has one of the best riffs I have heard. The riff is highly reminisant of Keenan's home band of Corrosion of Conformity, and is combined with Anselmo's vocals, so brilliantly portrayed in his band, Pantera.

So why only 4 stars? Well I would've given it 5, if I didn't know that they could've done better, which they could've. It just sounds like there is something missing. Everything is there, but perhaps it just a little under-produced. But one could argue that they left it like that on purpose to acheive that 'raw' effect. Even so, I still think they could've done more with this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smoke,drink and a bad mood, 1 Sep 2004
This review is from: Nola (Audio CD)
Basically this is a literal stoner album. After all,the reason it was originally recorded was cos the band wanted to make a soundtrack to their smoking sessions.
Its not as heavy as you would expect, given the guys involved. But it has grooves/melodies which are totally missing from any of the other bands they come from.
As a side-project it is one of the best.In fact I prefer them to most of the other supposed "stoner" things out there.
However, you don't have to be into drugs to like them. Its more like some kind of Judas Priest/Black Sabbath/Lynerd Skynerd hybrid.Though there is much more aggression than your average laid back dudes.
Buy it if you like quite heavy, but with grooves, but the 2nd album is more varied and more interesting.
