A review of another version of this camera on Amazon described it as "a toy camera". Sadly, even that's not accurate. For a young child to use it, you don't need so many megapixels but you do need foolproof point-and-press settings, and to be able to recall what each badly-composed picture might be via checking the date and time.

But, as another reviewer said, this camera has a terrible dark screen which makes it very hard for a kid to see what they're taking - either in outdoor sunshine or indoors. Worse, although anti-shake is advertised, it and all the other settings are lost whenever you turn the camera off. They can't be set 'on' by default. Trawling through menus every time the camera's turned on, because otherwise your child's excited hands will never take an unblurred photo, is obviously not going to happen.

Finally, and unbelievably, although like all digital cameras the date and time are recorded in every photo's file, they'll always be wrong. The camera has no way of setting them, although the PC (note, no Mac) software can manually change them on each photo once you've uploaded it. If, of course, you have a clue when each shapeless mass was taken in the first place :-(

I was so surprised by these basic flaws that I emailed 'Vivitar' (actually a company called Sakar) to check that the above was all really true. They wrote back politely and apologetically to confirm it - and added "Thank you for using Sakar International, the leader in technology." I think there was a word missing.

There are a lot of negative reviews about this, but I like it. I don't want to be David Bailey, just take simple pictures. It's absolutely fine, it's also good for sending pictures of the diagrams needed for my course, to the university. For the price this is good!

We bought this camera for our daughter. We took it out of the box, put batteries and card in in turned it on....put it back in the box and sent it back to the supplier. Quality of the screen so bad you could not see what you are looking at when indoors.

The camera was a perfect present for my 12 year old daughter, even my wife liked it when she saw it. It is a great camera for someone looking for a camera that is simple to use, yet has enough features including zoom, for the camera to produce a good quality photo's as well. In fact I am pleased I brought her a 4GB SD card, as she has not stopped snapping since Christmas day.
In conclusion, it's an easy to use camera, that does all you need to take a good picture, and of course if your female, it's pink!

This is a great little camera and it produces good pictures at both 3 and 5mp settings.
I gave it a good testing before presenting to to my 6 year old grandchild.
She took it out of the box, switched it on, pointed it at a subject and pressed the button resulting in a good picture.
What more do you need.
Good delivery and well packed.

It is perfect first camera. I bought it for my 5 year old daughter for her not to use my SLR. This little Vivitar is very easy to use, has not too many buttons and simple zoom. As most of the cameras with built in flash photos are much better when taken in day light. Those taken indoors are coming out grainy, no surprise here. It has also video option.
For a while I was considering buying special children camera but I'm very happy that I didn't. This camera is much cheaper, it uses standard SD card what is more convenient to me than built in only memory and teaches children taking care of equipment - they can't be dropping it.
Batteries don't last long in this camera so it is worthy invest into rechargeable ones.
If you buying it as a first camera for your little child, I fully recommend it. If you are looking for camera for teenage child or yourself... buy different one.

Vivitar makes a range of sensibly priced digital cameras that are just perfect to take on holiday. Purchased this for my friends birthday and she loves it. She's about to head off on a Nile Cruise, so she was very glad to receive this for her birthday.
