4.0 out of 5 stars A Perfectly Splendid Arrangement
Mr Hawthorne (ne Andrew Mayer Cohen) is a highly talented
singer, songwriter and producer whose debut album
'A Strange Arrangement' affectionately captures the spirit
of late 60's and early 70's American soul music.

Well-crafted, lo-fi, late-night listening for lovers
(and other potential enthusiasts of the genre).

Atiramo-nos com ânsia e ânimo para desfrutar relaxados mas o álbum soa muito igual e monocórdico, sem deslumbre nem encanto suficiente que nos deixe completamente arrebatados.Decepção??? Também não diria tanto...

Well-crafted, lo-fi, late-night listening for lovers

There really isn't a bad song in the collection.

Of the 12 at our disposal stand-out tracks would have to include :
'One Track Mind', the loose snare drum, horn arrangement, hand-clapping
and canny vocal harmonies are an absolutely accurate period delight;
the spirit of Curtis Mayfield must have been smiling from the wings
during the recording of 'Maybe So, Maybe No'. Mr Hawthorne's
slightly tentative falsetto creates an authentically endearing effect.
'Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'' is worthy of the best of Motown.

'I Wish It Would Rain' is one of the lovliest reimaginings
on the album. We are transported back to a time when music
still had the power to thrill. A perfect sparkling gem of a song.

The project is unlikely to set the world on fire. I suspect it
will be heard far less than it deserves to be on these shores.

There's nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving it a listen.

Highly Recommended.

This is an exquisite album. It clocks in at just over thirty-four minutes, but it is quite a rich musical cake to listen to, and does create a yearning for more. Other reviewers have acknowledged its early 70s soul qualities, but I also detect the influence of Todd Rundgren at his early 70s best, and even a bit of Brian Wilson if he was in thrall to the likes of Curtis Mayfield as opposed to Phil Spector. The use of instrumentation such as Wurlitzer electric piano and banked vocal harmonies do recall the heyday of black vocal harmony combos such as The Delfonics and the more mellifluous moments of the Chi-Lites, but it works in an appealingly retro-meets-modern way. Rafael Saddiq may have led the way in taking such musical anachronisms into chart territory, but I shall keep a close eye on Mayer Hawthorne's future development. It's a good era for retro-soul stylings; this album, alongside Lee Fields' My World are amongst my best albums of 2009.

What a surprise to hear such music with feeling. This takes me back to the roots of pop soul but It is not just the feel for an era the songs stand alone as great songs of today. Thanks to Mayer Hawthorne for a album that is a must listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars just amazing..., 23 Aug 2010
This review is from: A Strange Arrangement (Audio CD)
very motown-esque - achieves the authentic sound without seeming cheesy, yet there's something very modern & unpretentious about mayer & his music.

perfect mix of upbeat funkier songs (i.e. 'The Ills' and 'One Track Mind') and beautiful yet sometimes quirky soul ballads (such as 'Green Eyed Love', 'Let Me Know' and 'Just Aint Gonna Work Out').

and on top of all that, i bought this special edition full album + bonus tracks from amazon at the ridiculously under-priced £2.75!! even if you buy this at the current price, it's still a bargain considering what you're getting for your money...

Bought after hearing a song from his latest CD. I listened to the track clips and knew I would like his music. His music has lots of rhythm and melody, often with an almost familiar reference to something else. Clever and tantalising!

Came promptly and is an album for most people. Both fun and soulful, great for any occasion really. Also, it's definitely worth checking out some of the videos for the songs.

Mayer Hawthorne is a real talented old-school style soul singer and he did the right thing trusting PBW and Stones Throw to sign with. The end product is pitch-perfect vocals over simple wonderful beats. No unnecessary featuring artists, auto-tuning, generic beats, or anything else designed to make the album marketable to teenagers. Absolute magic. Buy now or miss out....
