I was pleasantly surprised with Hooper's new score for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". The style is varied, creating scope for the different colours and themes for the film, yet "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" has always stood out for me, as being the best of the soundtracks so far.
Despite this preference, the score boasts subtle, foreboding strings and atmospheric soprano voices, that set the mood nicely for what is to come [especially in the first three tracks].
Meanwhile, there are pieces that reflect the light-hearted and comical occurences in this film, markedly "Wizard Wheezes", "The Slug Party", School!" and "The Weasley Stomp". The iterations of Williams' "Hedwig's Theme" were a surprise, since its addition in "Ginny" was barely developed [fromm the original] unlike in the previous two soundtracks.
In conclusion, Hooper has produced something that is enjoyable, complementary, yet perhaps a little too subtle to stand out above the visual dynamics of the film. Now Hooper has professed he has opted out of the last film [Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which will be divided into two separate film experiences [Part one is scheduled for release on 19 November 2010, whilst part two is scheduled for release on 15 July 2011]], John Williams, Winner of 5 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 7 Baftas and 21 Grammy Awards, has stated he would love to score "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", providing he could fit this in to his scedule. This news is ,to many, very exciting since Williams' treasure troves of memorable themes, emotion and orchestral wizardry seem bottomless.
