Compared to quite a few of the previous Dragon Ball Z handheld RPGs, this one is certainly the shining star. The game is fun, relatively long for a DS RPG (<25 hours) and relatively good looking, for a DS game. Story wise, it follows from the end Dragonball, to near the end of the Saiyan saga.
The general idea of the game is very similar to the more old school RPGs, with turn based battles, items, leveling up and other such designs. With all of the more unique battle systems around now, one might think this old way would be tired and used, however it makes a nice change of pace from the more innovative battle systems. The movement on the game is pretty much free form, with your character moving freely over a backdrop of caves, fields and such like.
The graphics are all 2D, though instead of looking terrible, they are very well done and a lot better looking than much of the 3D work that is attempted in DS games. The backgrounds are handdrawn and are very nice, and overall the fact that it is 2D doesn't take away from the game itself.
The sounds are all what you would expect from a run of the mill 2D RPG, nothing is too impressive though some of the background music is nice.
Overall, this game is definitely worth a buy if you are a Dragon Ball Z fan, as it is well put together and a lot more enjoyable than a lot of the previous installments. Those without an interest in this story-wise will get a semi-decent game but won't get the full enjoyment out of it.
