3.0 out of 5 stars A fairly-good purchase.
One of the worser WWE pay-per-views of 2009. There is little to be ecstatic about, but some exciting matches feature throughout.

After the 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania took place, WWE Backlash came right round the corner with plenty of rematches for superstars to have a "backlash" and unfinished business will be settled as 3 championships are on the line. One of the Hardy Boys must say the words "I quit" and a WWE Hall of Famer steps back in the ring again to face off against Chris Jericho.

1. ECW Championship: Christian def. Jack Swagger - 6/10

A good opening contest with plenty of dominance from Swagger who utilises his mat wrestling skills, but one of his plans backfires as Chrisitan uses it to win the ECW Championship.

2. Chris Jericho def. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat - 6/10

Steamboat puts in an impressive performance here and comes up short as the brilliant mind of Jericho helps beat the WWE legend, who came so close to victory.

3. Kane def. CM Punk - 6/10

Fresh off his Money in the Bank win at Wrestlemania 25 CM Punk faces off against the man who he kicked off the ladder to win the match, Kane. The Big Red Machine puts in a dominant performance to beat the Straightedge Superstar.

4. "I Quit" Match: Jeff Hardy def. Matt Hardy - 7/10

Both these men put in a good match with plenty of weapons used to help eahc superstar gain an advantage, but Jeff uses all he can to make sure Matt said those humiliating words, after Matt tried reasoning with the Extreme Enigma.

5. WWE Championship: The Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase) def. Triple H (c), Batista & Shane McMahon - 8/10

This match was very enjoyable on my account being as i'm a big Randy Orton fan, but all 6 of these men put in a good show and although their was a grudge in the middle of this against Orton, the Viper found a way to gain an upper hand and win his 3rd WWE Championship.

6. World Heavyweight Championship: Last Man Standing Match - Edge def. John Cena (c) - 9/10

I'm not a big fan of John Cena and this match proved he can put on a good performance. These men have had one of the best rivalries in the WWE and it all ended here as Edge won but it wasn't all his own doing to win back his World Heavyweight Championship.

Extras include:

Aftermath of the WWE Championship

This PPV is one of the best from 2009 and although there was no Shawn Michaels or The Undertaker, the rest of the superstars made it one to remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars The final Backlash. And WHAT a finale!, 22 May 2011
By
R. Wood "ryecroftwood2" - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: WWE - Backlash 2009 [DVD] (DVD)
Backlash 2009 is something of a monument in WWE's pay-per-view history. Or rather, it was. This would be the final Backlash event WWE would put on before deciding to change most of their pay-per-view names and themes. In this case, the theme of Backlash of repercussions and fallout from WrestleMania would give way to Extreme Rules (now the format for the April pay-per-view since 2010).

Of course, what helps lessen the sadness, is that the Backlash event goes out with a real big bang. It's an absolutely excellent card from start to finish, with the consistency that any essential show has throughout. A brilliant opener, strong undercard and thrilling main-events can be found on this DVD. And all disappointments from the average WrestleMania 25 are made up for in kind here. So fans who felt let down (apart from Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels obviously) can expect to see the show that they deserve.

ECW Championship Match
Jack Swagger (Champion) vs. Christian
Here, Captain Charisma had come home, much to our delight. And in this great opening bout, he performs with typical flourish. Swagger combines his amateur background and considerable power to great effect, resulting in a clash of styles that's nice to behold. Fine chemistry and solid action throughout make this a charm. The outcome is pleasing also. (8/10)

Chris Jericho vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
One of the best things about WrestleMania 25 was The Dragon's comeback performance. After that, we just had to see the Hall of Famer get back in the ring one last time, and again, Ricky wrestles like he never went away. Chris Jericho is the perfect opponent for Steamboat's last hurrah and the result is a gem, with crisp moves and wonderful storytelling. The overall result can't be rated TOO highly, but it's nevertheless a marvellous sight. (7/10)

Kane vs. CM Punk
I got the feeling that this contest between the 2009 Money in the Bank winner and the `runner-up' was just thrown onto the card to give them both something to do in the meantime. So for this to be yet another really good bout is a happy surprise indeed. Punk displays some nice offence and counters here, and Kane shows that he can still go with the right opponent. A strong finish and the knowledge that both wrestlers would go on to achieve world title glory provide such satisfaction. (7/10)

"I Quit" Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
This type of bout can be so difficult to pull off successfully due to the stipulation. Of course, there have been some legendary successes (i.e. Flair vs. Funk, Rock vs. Mankind and Cena vs. JBL) and although the Hardys don't quite mirror any of those, they provide a rewarding pay-off to their feud. The brothers perform at the level we normally expect, but there's also some great psychology (from Matt in particular) and intensity here. The final moments and the breathtaking climax are classic stuff, making this superior to their WrestleMania collision. (8/10)

Great Khali Kiss Cam with "Santina" Marella.
Why? Just why? An absolutely pointless, tasteless segment involving Khali and the most ridiculous gimmick that came from the abominable Diva battle royal at WrestleMania. The fact that Beth Phoenix had to endure this and the `match' that followed was disrespectful to her. Inexcusable. (0/10)

6-Man Tag Team Match for the WWE Championship
Triple H (Champion), Batista & Shane McMahon vs. Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase
The main-event for WrestleMania 25 was SUCH a letdown. After weeks of perfect build-up, the end result was completely dead (thanks to poor match-booking). Thankfully, that's not the case here. This is a wild title affair, with some great action and great performances from all involved. Orton's storyline here received the natural conclusion it deserved, which makes things even better. The chilling aftermath will be remembered for a long time. (8/10)

Last Man Standing World Heavyweight Championship Match
John Cena (Champion) vs. Edge
The whole feud between Cena and Edge has been one of the greatest rivalries in recent memory, solidifying the main-event credentials of both athletes. Alas, all good things must come to an end, but the rivalry receives the endgame it so richly deserves. The two put on an absolutely hellacious match-up, perhaps their greatest outing together. The crowd is so hot, and the two reward the fans with a back-and-forth war of attrition that spills out all over the arena. Maybe Big Show's involvement was unnecessary, but the incredible conclusion has to be seen to be believed. Match-of-the-night and an awesome way to end an awesome show. (9/10)

Disregarding the tedious Khali Kiss Cam angle, WWE Backlash 2009 is excellent bordering on near-perfect. The match-quality ranges from very good to classic, with every bout having something worth watching. With so many satisfying results and this marking the end of an era, you really can't afford to overlook this.

Again, the number of extras is pitiful on WWE pay-per-view DVD releases (there's only one exclusive focusing on the aftermath of the six-man tag), but the value is to be found in the show itself. And there IS such value to be found here, much more than the three-disc set of WrestleMania. And of course, this is cheaper. It's a no-brainer really.

4.0 out of 5 stars A DECENT BACKLASH, 27 Aug 2009
By
This review is from: WWE - Backlash 2009 [DVD] (DVD)
Usually, following on from Wrestlemania, Backlash cannot even exist near the daddys shadow. 2009 was different because a few good feuds continued with a vengeance. Here's the matches.........
CHRISTIAN VS JACK SWAGGER "He had it all in TNA, but here's Christian buried on ECW. Not a very exciting match. Swagger tries to be Kurt Angle, but looks more like Emilios character in The Breakfast Club." 3/10
CHRIS JERICHO VS RICKY THE DRAGON STEAMBOAT "I quite enjoyed the match at Mania. Piper held his own, Superfly was a sheer shadow of his past, but to see Ricky still superfit was a thrill. This is a decent match, not as riveting, but not as bad as many say." 6/10
CM PUNK VS KANE "Standard routine, but has some nice moments. The end is a blast." 7/10
MATT HARDY VS JEFF HARDY "Very low key and quite embarrassing. Typical by numbers, which is a shame because this is an I QUIT match. The end is original, but quite pathetic. The ladder drop is just dull. 3/10
THE LEGACY VS TRIPLE H, SHANE MCMAHON AND BATISTA "One hell of a match. Though Legacy are quite bland and Randy carries his team, he does so well. Shane is fun to watch, Batista is quite repressed though. Triple H is brilliant in his execution of the match, and to a suprise ending." 10/10
JOHN CENA VS EDGE "A LAST MAN STANDING match. This is an epic in its own right. Cena has improved and it shows. Edge is the perfect heel, reminding me of Brock Lesnar, in that the crowd hate and respect him at the same time. I was a bit annoyed at the Cena 'boos' because he does a very good job. They sell eachothers moves, they counter attck each other, they fight in and out of the arena. The whole thing has an epic feel of the attitude era. Really dreadful ending though which spoils the amazing build up. WWE does TNA." 9/10

5.0 out of 5 stars WWE Backlash 2009 ends with a new ECW, WWE and World Heavyweight Champion, 30 May 2011
By
This review is from: WWE - Backlash 2009 [DVD] (DVD)
WWE Backlash 2009 Match Ratings:

1. Christian vs Jack Swagger (ECW Championship) 4/5

WOW, this opening match for the ECW Championship got WWE Backlash 2009 off to a great start. Pretty much back and forth action and both Christian and Swagger were giving the WWE Universe a great one on one match for the ECW Championship. It ended with Christian living the dream of defeating Swagger to become the new ECW Champion.

2. Chris Jericho vs Ricky The Dragon Steamboat 4/5

This match where Jericho goes up against a legend of Ricky The Dragon Steamboat was an amazing match. This match again involved back and forth action where Steamboat showed us all that he could still keep up with a star such as Y2J Chris Jericho. The match ended with Jericho making Steamboat tap out to the Walls of Jericho, but the effort of Steamboat was still amazing.

3. Kane vs CM Punk 3/5

One of my least favourite matches of the pay-per-view, but still a good little match all round as two former members of the money in the bank ladder match of WrestleMania 25 go at it. The match itself was pretty much back and forth with both Kane and Punk dominating one and other. The match simply ended with Kane delivering the deadly Choke slam for the victory over Mr Money in the Bank.

4. Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy (I Quit Match) 3/5

This match was good, but not as good as the match they had at the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania, where that match was an extreme rules match and this match at WWE Backlash 2009 was an I Quit Match. The match overall was good, though not really extreme, but it was good to see Jeff getting a victory over his sick twisted brother Matt.

5. Shane McMahon, Batista and Triple H vs Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase (WWE Championship) 4/5

Overall this was a great six man tag team match for the WWE Championship. The match though in my opinion was totally dominated by Legacy, though when the likes of Triple H and Batista were involved, then it is a different story. The match ended with an RKO and punt to the head for Randy Orton to become the new WWE Champion.

6. Edge vs John Cena (Last Man Standing Match for World Heavyweight Championship) 4/5

A great Last Man Standing Match and a match of the year candidate for 2009. This match was not only amazing, but it was also brutal with both Cena and Edge beating the living hell out of each other. This match not only involved in ring action, but weapons were involved and the match got taken all over the building. The match ended with the Big Show throwing Cena into a spotlight and Edge remained the last man standing and Edge left as the new World Heavyweight Champion.

WWE Backlash 2009 for me was a great pay-per-view and I would recommend it to all of you WWE Fans who loved 2009 pay-per-views.

5.0 out of 5 stars WWE's card of 2009, 19 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: WWE - Backlash 2009 [DVD] (DVD)
Coming three weeks after a disappointing Wrestlemania this was an extremely satisfying show. There were five good matches, three new champions (all of whom were very deserving) and almost nothing that could be described as poor.

ECW title: Christian vs Jack Swagger 8/10
Another quality match from the reliable as ever Christian. They logically played up Swagger's size and power and made Christian seem like an underdog. I was very pleased by Christian's victory here.

Chris Jericho vs Ricky Steamboat 7/10
This was really exciting in places and is a credit to both Steamboat and Jericho. There were some very nice false finishes and Steamboat looked remarkably good for a 56 year old. Really this match should have been booked at Wrestlemania 25 instead of that handicap match.

CM Punk vs Kane 5/10
It was adequate, but I think that after Punk's Money in the bank victory at Wrestlemania he should have been given a better opponent than the bumbling Kane, I also feel that Punk should have won (Kane's victory didn't really achieve anything). Still, Punk persevered and the match was decent enough.

I Quit match: Matt Hardy vs Jeff Hardy 9/10
I preferred this to Matt and Jeff's rushed Extreme Rules match at 'Mania, here they were allocated more time enabling them to concentrate on telling a coherent story rather than just racing through stunts. The finish with Jeff casually performing a legdrop through the table was brilliant.

Santino Marella vs Beth Phoenix 0/10
This was clearly intended to be the comedy relief for the evening, but it wasn't funny and it also gave Vince McMahon another opportunity to humiliate Jim Ross when Santino claimed he was in a relationship with Ross. The only pointless inclusion of the show.

WWE title: Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon vs Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes 9/10
A very well booked and executed six man tag team match (in spite of Shane McMahon's presence). It was also great that DiBiase and Rhodes got a chance to shine here after being excluded from Wrestlemania. Credit must also go to Triple H for putting Orton over by pinfall rather than having Batista or Shane do it.

Last Man Standing match for the World title: Edge vs John Cena 10/10
Thanks to Edge this was one of John Cena's finest matches ever. There were plenty of big moves, weapons and movement to keep it exciting including a spectacular spot where Cena gives Edge the Attitude adjustment from the announce desk into the crowd. The finish came when Big Show chokeslammes Cena into a big spotlight after which Cena was counted out and Edge regained the World title, another result I was thrilled by.

While there were no matches as good as Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 25, overall this show was far more consistent than 'Mania and, as I mentioned, the results of the matches were mostly very pleasing. A thoroughly entertaining show, this is one of WWE's best pay per views.

Comming of a disapointed WM 25, this ppv blows the roof. Absolute highlights are the Six-man tag team match for the wwe-championship...and the fantastic Last man Standing match for the World Heavyweight belt, which has a schocking ending.

The undercard matches are pretty good too....except for 2:
The Great Khali kiss cam with Santina Marella.
And Ricky The Dragon Steamboat vs. Chris Jericho...why on earth the wwe would continue these two embarising storylines from WM 25, I have no idea..

But apart from that, a very entertaining show.

backlashh 2009 is the best event of 2009 and im saying that even after a very pleasing bash and a solid summerslam which aired last night,it was an event that was eager to put some of the poor decisions from wrestlemania 25 and it did that and more.
The event was filled with quality matches, great feuds and a real desire to be the best, john cena and edge put on one heck of a last man standing match, the WWE titkle match was also class and christian and jack swagger put on some match,it was flawless really,a job well done.
