4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish, Sleek, Captivating, French Thriller.
First time i saw this film on tv, many years ago it had me repeating scenes in my mind. So i watched it again and it still impresses me with it's style and flow. Screenplay is very well paced, like most of Besson's films and captures your attention so well. Many films today do not have that directorial talent to draw you into a film aswell as Besson does, and Nikita is no...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware those terrible synths!
Great film, had to knock one star off for the awful, truly woeful soundtrack.
Well worth a watch although feels quite dated, great cameo from the 'cleaner' - later to become probably Besson's greatest character a little further down the line.
Would have benefited from a tighter edited first 30-40 minutes, the good stuff seemed over in a flash in the 'meat' of...

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and still the best, 27 Jun. 2006
This review is from: Nikita [DVD] [1990] (DVD)
A gritty, violent but also romantic and very sexy film. Luc Besson's work is brilliant and been copied a number of times (Black cat, the assasin, La Femme Nikita TV Series) but this is head shoulders above those. Anne Parillaud is sizzling as the title character while the supporting cast is great, Jean Reno, Tceky Karyo, Jeanne Moreau all give stellar performances. Besson's direction and writing is first class, especially the action scenes while the romantic storylines bring the film to another level. Definately worth the money unlike the many remakes (especially the assassin which is nearly scene for scene)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nikita "La Femme Nikita" (Blu-ray Version), 5 April 2014

This review is from: Nikita [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This 1990 French Italian co-production both written and directed by Luc Beeson about the transformation of a convicted drug-crazed street waif superbly played Anne Parillaud who is given the choice of the death sentence given to her for her crimes being carried out or joining a programme to become a sophisticated highly trained assassin/spy her mentor/control is ably played by Tchéky Karyo who has appeared in American productions such as "Bad Boys" and "The Patriot".
Luc Beeson's action thriller very much is in the modern film noir style has a couple of themes and scenes that he repeats in his later movies such as "Léon the professional" and "Colombiana" but don't be fooled Nikita is the first and the best of his creations.

The region B locked 25 GB Blu-ray released in the UK in 2009 this disc has been encoded using MPEG-4 AVC in full 1080p resolution in the original aspect ratio 2.35.1 of the theatrical release thankfully this version of the film has not been dubbed but is in French LPCM stereo 48KHZ which gives the soundtrack a very clear and bombastic sound which delivers very satisfying gunfire sound and deep rumbling explosions for film of this vintage and with very clear white subtitles that appear in the lower part of the frame if you are follower of Beeson's work this is a must for your Blu-ray collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 30 Jan. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nikita [VHS] [1990] (VHS Tape)
This film certainly gives subtitled films a good rep. I remember watching this film on TV a few years back and it has stuck in my mind ever since. The plotline is so fascinating and it keeps hold of you the whole way through. The acting from all cast members is outstanding. Hollywood tried doing a copy of it with 'Assassin' and totally destroyed it. V. good film, watch it

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the remakes and TV series, 25 Oct. 2010

This original version is really top notch French film making at its very best. The plot revolves around a girl criminal, forced to become an assassin for the French Secret Service. Every performance is flawless, the suspense maintained throughout, and the ending suitably satisfying. Forget the US remake, and the subsequent telly series, this is the real deal. European Cinema at the top of the game. I defy you to be disappointed. No less than five stars for this modern classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only the French......., 20 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Nikita [DVD] [1990] (DVD)
Only the French could invent a heroine like Nikita, tragic, mad, dangerous but ultimately vunerable. Watch this film, the scene where she is walking home from her 'date' with the rain pouring down, her stockings shredded and mascara streaming down her face. If this was Hollywood, she would have a slightly torn dress and a tiny cut over one eye.

A shocking film but a must see. One of my favourites but only watch it with subtitles, not the dubbed version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Art? No. But a fun, smart and occasionally even emotional action film, 13 April 2014

This review is from: Nikita [DVD] [1990] (DVD)
A drugged out. almost brain-dead punk full of attitude and anger, Nikita is caught after helping rob a drug store, leaving several cops dead. She’s given a choice. Accept a quiet death penalty, or agree to be trained to be a secret government assassin. A good part of the film (and arguably the most interesting) is her training itself, as Nikita’s rebellious nature keeps getting her pushed to the edge of getting kicked out (and hence executed), while her strange sullen sexiness begins to seduce her Henry Higgins, an agent assigned to oversee her who finds himself getting more than a bit obsessed. Meanwhile, the always wonderful Jeanne Moreau tries to teach this nihilistic punk how to come off as a woman of the world, the better to be able to get close to her targets.

This is often argued to be a film of style over substance, and in the big picture that’s probably fair. And it didn't hold up quite as well on a recent 2nd viewing 20+ years later as I hoped. But still, this spends more time on human interaction and emotion, and less on blowing stuff up than almost any of its contemporary counterparts, Not art, but for a popcorn movie smart, inventive and fun.

Superb Luc Besson film with Anne Parillaud absoutely stunning as the nihilistic drug-taking young woman who is turned into a state killing machine. Sounds unlikely but her transformation is convincingly drawn. I bought this to replace a rather poor VHS version. Worth every penny

4.0 out of 5 stars Nikita, 17 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Nikita [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this title to remember how nikita should have been, not sugar coated holywood style. It lived up to my memories, although dated firmly in the eighties the level of discomfort in the storyline and sympathy you develop for the lead character ... Well worth a look.

The film was another gripping production of Luc Besson, and fabulous performance by Anne Parillaud. Way better than the US version which followed. Great photography and film score. It does help to watch the French version as parts get lost in translation.

4.0 out of 5 stars "..CLASSIC ACTION THRILLER..", 8 Jun. 2014

A classic Luc Besson movie, like Leon which he later directed its about an assassin, a female assassin rescued from death row to be trained for years as a professional killer, great story, amazing cast as usual for a Besson movie, great to see Jean Reno pop up for a small role playing a character called the cleaner, which was a basis for the future Leon project, this is a very violent movie with plenty of cool action scenes and bloody shoot-outs as you would expect from Besson movies, personally the ending is a tad lacking in some way as I wanted to go out with a bang, but overall this is quality filmmaking, great action thriller classic!
French movie with English subtitles
Lots of cool features like behind the scenes etc.
Great Blu-ray picture for a 1990 movie.
