This review is from: 4-Track Era Bundle (Audio CD)
Early mixes from 1990 to 1992, when DJ Shadow was trying to make an impression as a teenager. The first disc contains two tracks from early mixes that aired on Bay area radio station KMEL. They mix of hundreds of hip-hop samples that are breathtaking, if a bit relentless (both tracks go on for close to forty minutes!). I suppose they didn't break them down into shorter tracks because the mixes were heard in a flow. The second album contains remixes (as well as a selection of Shadow's Megamixes of the era) and the third album collects Shadow's own productions, closer to Endtroducing. It's all phenomenal stuff if you're even remotely interested in hip-hop and funk. The fact that the three discs are over three hours and thirty minutes long makes it well worth the price, the musical quality is on par with Endtroducing and Pre-emptive Strike, which is to say stratospheric. The audio quality, as far as I can tell (haven't had a chance yet to pop the dics in my hi-fi yet), is excellent, especially given the sources. This is amazing stuff, that has aged quite gracefully and should please nostalgic fans of the earlier sound as well as people who have yet to travel in the valley of Shadow.
