4.0 out of 5 stars Can't start a fire without a spark!
Firstly, the music here is unquestionably awesome. On these 18 tracks Springsteen shows off his versatility, integrity, humour, passion and sheer songsmithery (I know, it's not really a word). As an update to the 'Greatest Hits' CD released in 1995 this works well, however as an intoduction to the best moments from the Boss it's flawed. There are no songs from his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Why bother?
This compilation adds little to previous efforts and is just a lazy attempt by Sony to cash in on the latest tour. Concentrates on E Street band releases to differentiate it from other collections. 2.0 out of 5 stars 'Bonus' tracks, 20 Jun. 2009

Like many compilations, this is a product of a marketing department and not the work of someone who actually cares about music. Why else would the final 2 tracks be designated as bonuses? That would imply that this album was originally issued without them - and that they have been included especially for this edition (wow, we're so grateful) ... well sorry, Sony, I ain't that stooopid. Nevertheless, congratulations on the cover. Next time, however, think about the music. Just a tip from someone outside 'the biz'.

There are no songs from his excellent 'Nebraska' album, nothing from 'Tunnel of Love' and not even a sniff of his mid-90's work. This compilation would be significantly improved by ditching the live songs and including 'Atlantic City' and 'Brilliant Disguise'. Another advantage that the '95 'Greatest Hits' had is that you got high quality tunes that aren't on any other studio albums e.g. 'Secret Garden', 'Streets of Philadelphia' and 'Murder Incorporated'. Overall this doesn't provide the same in-depth look at Bruce's career as the 2 CD 'The Essential Bruce Springsteen' and the track listing isn't as good as the original 'Greatest Hits', but you really can't fault the music. It represents a brief snapshot of Springsteen's history and also shows you where he is right now. I can't think of any other bands/artists who have written such consistently excellent records over a 30 year period and hopefully this will help introduce newcomers to his phenomenal body of work.

Bruce Springsteen is the foremost rock singer in the world today, all these years on he still proves the point with every album, with every tour he just keeps getting better. This set maybe a cash in on this tour, but I'll tell you what it's a very good one indeed.I've been a fan for most of his career so far, have pretty well all of his albums, and sure there are songs I personally would have liked to have had on here but,as a collection it's great to have so much of his best known classics in one set,and put together so well. The E street Band are one of the best and most creative
bands around both live and in the studio. The original Greatest Hits was I don't think of Bruce's making and many of the tracks then seemed to have been messed around with. This was certainly improved with the excellent Essential 2 and 3 CD set. This new one though is well worth getting and as many new fans will catch him at Hyde Park and Glastonbury why not release some thing this good with so many good songs on to get new fans into his music. The bonus live tracks are great to have.Yes this is a set new and already fans surely will treasure.

3.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity, 14 Jun. 2010

I have been a fan of Springsteen since 1980 and have nearly all of his album releases, including the '95 Greatest Hits which has a better track selection that this hastily compiled selection of 'highlights'. Of course, you can't argue with the inclusion of tracks such as "Blinded by the Light", "Born To Run", "Thunder Road", "The River", "Born in the USA" and "Glory Days", but why has albums such as "Nebraska", "Tunnel of Love", "Human Touch", "Lucky Town" and "The Ghost of tom Joad" been completely ignored? This leaves an 18 year gap between the tracks "Dancing in the Dark" and "The Rising". A period during which Springsteen released gems such as "Brilliant Disguise", "Tunnel of Love", "Human Touch", "Streets of Philadelphia" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad", which are missing here (not mentioning the title track a.o. from the brilliant "Nebraska" album from '82). Instead the compiler has chosen to include live versions of 2 songs he gave away and more recent (minor hits) such as "Radio Nowhere" and "Long Walk Home". Arguably, it's difficult to make Springsteen's best songs fit on one cd, but this is a missed opportunity in my opinion. New-comers should instead go for the 2 disc "Essential Springsteen" (preferably the limited edition which has a 3rd disc featuring various well-chosen rarities).

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable., 22 Jun. 2009

I am not a massive Springsteen fan but I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying this album. Not all of my favourite tracks are here (is there ever a compilation which features your personal favourites?) but there are some golden moments here. This CD is for my 'rock out' moments!

4.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity, 9 Jun. 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have been a Springsteen fan since the 70's and have just about every official album he's released. And whilst there are undeniable classics within this collection (Thunder Road, Born to Run, Hungry Heart, Rosalita etc.), there are equally as many classics missing (Jungleland, Racing In The Streets, Streets of Philadelphia, Ties That Bind, Bobby Jean etc.). The 4 stars given reflect the quality of those classics included which have stood the test of time and rank amongst rocks best. As for the rest... And where are the tracks from the 'Tunnel Of Love' album or the 'Seeger Sessions'? What a missed opportunity. A 2 CD set with greater breadth and depth would have been better. If you want to buy just one Springsteen album, make it 'The Essential Bruce Springsteen', or even the original 'Greatest Hits' album, both are stronger album than this compilation.

released after his much praised album 'working on a dream' its a wonder why this greatest hits features nothing from that album, anyway,it is very tempting to call this album a cash in,i cant deny that it probably is,bruce is touring at the minute and i feel most of the people attending the gig will more than likely have his complete works so the timing of this is odd to an extent.
This is a good selction of his works but not a definitive version by any means, there are plenty of omissions better suited in my opinion but that is always the complaint when it comes to greatest hits.

All the well known Springsteen numbers are here but if you've already got the previous Greatest Hits album first released in the 90's or the more recent Essential Bruce Springsteen there probably isn't much point in buying this album. However if you don't possess either & want a quick introduction to Springsteen's more well known works including some more recent tracks not included on the other two albums then this package makes a fine buy.Generally speaking it's good value although the booklet is a bit sparce without much info.

Hasn't Springsteen got any clout with the record company? If so why does he allow yet another greatest hits CD to be issued - with the "bonus tracks" being ones already released on the "Live 1975-1985" set.Similar things have happened with the single "Tracks" CD and the "Seeger Sessions American Land edition".It's about time he thought more of his fans.
