5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific new album
Let's keep it simple: Farm is tight, energetic, quite loud and just full of superb tunes. To believe that those guys are well in their 40's just puzzles me, as this sounds as fresh as Bug and as precise as Beyond. It sounds like the guys have finally found some peace in their own lives and here they're just having a blast, taking us along on a beautiful rocking ride. The...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sound Issues
Just in case you have bought this CD and are disappointed with the sound (like I was) be aware that the label has confirmed there was a manufacturing fault on the UK release - resulting in poor sound.

Search the internet and you will see the CD has been recalled, and you can get a replacement with the right sound levels.

I still think DJ are great...

4.0 out of 5 stars a good album let down by one thing...., 17 July 2009

A great album, with virtually all the tracks to my liking especially "plans" and "she's no here". I will say though that the sound quality is a bit iffy, I do know that the early CD pressings had sound quality issues, not sure if this download is from that version but it's not very clear sounding and times, a bit distorted as if my speakers are on their way out, which they are not. On that issue alone it's a 4 star.

This is just raw but polished
Sandblasted - polished raw.
It's blisteringly distorted - a sonic wall.
A real dirty sound - best played loud.
It fairly rips along - white water.
White noise orchestrated - each track seamlessly melding into the following.
Soursweet vocals
Soaring guitars.
Rumbling bass.
Tumbling drums.
Luscious - harmonious and melodic.
The guys are having fun - a riot.
Energising and uplifting - makes me happy to be alive - feel good.
Blissed out and blessed.
Listen and feel real good too.

In the space of two albums (Farm and Beyond) Dinosaur Jr have suddenly found all the creative energy of their masterworks of yore.

The first notes of the opening track hit you like a brick and each and every track does not let you go until the closing note. There are tunes a plenty with two tracks written by Lou Barlow to compliment the Mascis offerings and are surely some of Barlows finest works to date.

A brilliant DJ offering and one that is amongst the best albums of 2009.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not sure yet - a bit overfuzzed?, 26 Jun 2009

I thought Beyond was fantastic - as good as the other three Jay-Lou-Murph albums - but I'm not sure about this one. I've only listened to it twice, so things may change.

Like the nineties Dinosaur albums, there may be one or two duff tracks on Farm: possibly Plans and Friends. They're okay, but they don't really distinguish themselves, they sound too much like other songs on the album, but just not as good. They extend the album and make it seem just a touch over-long.

The production is the other problem. I know DJ are known and loved for their LOUD fuzz sound, particularly in the eighties, but this album may be just a little too fuzzed. Cleaner sound in some songs may have made them a bit more individual.

There's plenty to love about Farm: Over It is a great single and I Don't Wanna Go There and Said the People are fantastic. Lou's tracks are also tremendous, particularly the anthemic closer Imagination Blind. But better than Beyond, as many critics are saying? I think not.

All the same, I'm gonna keep listening to this album so I might completely revise this review... Maybe the duff tracks will become my favourites.
