5.0 out of 5 stars Will be living in my CD player for some time
I first heard Nell on BBC Radio 2 and was taken aback by her single Second Time Around. Now the album is out I must sing her praises - it really is a musical masterpiece. 11 tracks of pure bliss, beginning with the title track right through to 'Late Night Call' - not one piece of filler in sight. If you are a fan of singer songwriters with big voices and touching lyrics,...

Tonight was by far the best song on the album and unfortunately nothing else really came close. Was well worth it though, whata fantasic song!

I hadn't heard of this singer before hearing one of the tracks being played on the BBC from this CD. Nell has a beautiful, sensitive voice and sings with great depth of feeling.

So glad I stumbled across Nell Bryden. As others have said, not a single filler on the album, and a terrific mix of styles. Surely this deserves an award and a place in the charts?

4.0 out of 5 stars ...musical butterfly flitting round genres..., 12 Jun 2009

When I first heard the title track of this album, I thought it a slight piece of rock'n'roll, unworthy of the usually excellent Ms Bryden. Hearing it open the album proper does nothing to change my mind. Thankfully, it lasts under two minutes and then things start to get serious with the awesome country soul of 'Not Like Loving You', which comes on like a long lost Muscle Shoals classic circa 1970. It's the first gem on this album, but certainly not the last.

Ms Bryden likes to flit around musical genres, and this record sees her taking on country, soul, Blues, jazz and even a hint of gospel. It could have ended up a mess, but it says a lot for the entirely self-penned material and the musical expertise on offer that the record manages to hold together so well. Grammy award winning producer, David Kershenbaum, has worked with the likes of Tori Amos and Tracy Chapman, and has an assured way with the tracks he twiddled the knobs on, although some songs like 'Only Life I Know' could have done with a bit more energy, as it verges on the overly polite.

Which is why tunes like the title track come off best, as the urgency of the backing matches up to Ms Brydens energetic vocals. Generally, the album knocks gently, rather than kicking in the door, and the stand out songs like the aforementioned 'Not Like Loving You', 'Tonight', 'Late Night Call' and the title track are the ones where the paint has splashed over the edges. It is, however, a very good album, just not quite the stone cold classic I'd built myself up for.
