4.0 out of 5 stars Screamers Too
Predictable, low-budget science fiction sequel. Entertaining enough, but not a patch on the first Screamers film. The clever folks who put this DVD together have managed to make it a two-disc set that includes the cult original (hence the four stars). Watch for a surprise visit from Lance Henriksen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the product...more than the film itself., 17 Oct. 2013

The original Screamers is one of those hidden gems that a lot of people stumble across and in general think how had I not heard of this film before. I include myself in this group.

Screamers 2 was a must see for me after watching the original. It didn’t live up to expectations, but while the original hit gold on a limited budget, the second doesn’t It’s watchable, but just a shame it’s not as good.

Now from a review point I’m reviewing the product more than the film as you get a copy of the original Screamers with this and for that reason alone the product deserves 5 stars.

Screamers……5 stars
Screamers 2…..2.5 Stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars File next to Starship Troopers 3, 18 May 2009
This review is from: Screamers 2 - The Hunting [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
This movie is a direct-to-DVD sequel to the 1996 original Screamers movie which starred Peter Weller. The back-story to the Screamers movies tells of a rare mineral `Berynium' having been discovered on a distant a planet known as Sirius 6B. The topographical nature of the planet being mountainous snow-capped terrain. The Northern Economic Block (NEB) took possession of the planet and assigned an industrial workforce to mine the raw mineral. When the mining of Berynium caused radioactive fallout, the workers demanded improved working conditions and extra safety procedures. The Northern Economic Block ignored their requests presumably consumed by corporate greed and began to force the workers to continue. The workers rebelled and formed their own army known as The Alliance. Commander Hendrickson (Peter Weller) played the leader of the Alliance forces who fought a long and terrible war that practically laid the planet to ruin. The Alliance installed an automated production factory deep underground as a defence against the near victorious NEB forces. The facility churned out automated defence devices known as Screamers; nasty little metallic gopher-like machines that would skim just beneath the ground that would creep up on unsuspecting enemy forces and chop them to pieces with razor-sharp rotating blades. The corpses would then be carried off by the little blighters who would use the organic raw materials for all kinds of revolting purposes. Realising that the Screamers themselves were beginning to not distinguish between the humans they would attack, and coming to the disturbing discovery that they were starting to evolve and appear like humans, Commander Hendrickson decided to abandon the planet with a small team of fellow soldiers. It was a mission of which he was the sole survivor. The finale of the first movie left the viewer with the feeling that not even the legendary Commander would survive the trip back to earth.

This sequel sees Earthforce receiving a distress call from an apparently abandoned mining facility on Sirius 6B, and despatching a small rescue team to investigate. Despite the production being intended as a direct-to-DVD film, the production of `The Hunting' has clearly been put together with some thought. The special effects right from the outset are quite good. A hapless group of human survivors being eviscerated by the screamers introduces the film, and the rescue vessel and flight recorder crew briefing effects are also of a high standard. The group of unnamed jobbing actors disembark from their ship and roam the rocky wilderness, encountering a few of the aforementioned survivors who fire upon them believing the rescue party to be screamers. Upon entering the mining facility the team locate the derelict screamer production facility and bed down for the night. It isn't long before they unwittingly awaken the automated facility and all hell breaks loose. There is a guest appearance by a genre favourite, and then the plucky soldiers begin their battle for survival.

Whilst the finale of the first movie was suitably `Dick-ensian', with the awakening of a teddy bear screamer in Peter Weller's escape shuttle seeming very `Phillip K' - the same cannot be said for this sequel, even if the picture is promoted as having been `inspired' by Phillip K. Dick's Second Variety short-story. The movie is exactly what it appears to be: a low-budget science fiction movie with high aspirations that pulls itself free of B-movie rubbish yet cannot scale the dizzy heights of a high quality release. Yet one positive that the film does achieve is the correction of the audience's perception that these straight-to-DVD movies are put together by half-witted talentless incompetents. The bright and breezy featurette shows director Sheldon Wilson as an experienced and highly enthusiastic man working very hard on his way up the movie-making hierarchy, using the forum of a straight-to-DVD Screamer sequel as a credit on his portfolio. Similar to the recent Starship Troopers 3 DVD/Blue Ray release the picture is clearly put together with great gusto by all involved. One unique selling point is the original Screamers movie is included as a bonus disc. That's quite good value when you think about it.

This is a fun, fast-moving and interesting film. It's not as good as the first one, but it nearly is.

For what the film is (a direct-to-DVD sequel to a little-known 15 year-old film) it's surprisingly good.

It's written by one of the co-writers of the first film so you get the same twisty-turny plotline and interesting situations, but, contrary to what other people have said, I don't think it is just a repeat of the original. This one moves the story forwards. A third film would be welcome, though I doubt they could ever afford it.

It's also interesting to see what can be done nowadays with a small budget.

The only thing missing from this film was... it would have been great to revisit the locations from the first film, especially the Alliance base with its cool entrance!

A return to Siruis B as a result of rescue call when the planet was thought dead - very Aliens I thought in look and feel - and very gory in places
It was a good attempt (Lance Henriksen good as ever..) but lacked the style of the first. in the same way that Aliens and Alien were a different take - as with the Hunting its more of a stand up fight than a discovery film
I really liked the first one of the two films so I think that makes me in the minority but Philip K Disk stories are always thought provoking
I realy liked the fact you get both films in the box - I suspect that I will come back to the Hunting less often than the original and the twist is kinda obvious - but a good action film all the same

First thing I should mention is that this is actually a 2 disc set and you actually get both Screamers and Screamers 2. The essence of the first film is that a group of scientists create some machines to use in their battle with some big coroporation on some desloate planet. As it progresses, the machines start to become self aware and end up attacking anyone human, not just the intended enemy.

The idea of the second film is about a rescue team that have been sent back to the planet to pick up some survivors before the planet is hit by a meteor storm. As usual, one member of the team has a secret agenda and ends up reactivating the now (mainly) dormant screamers. The first half of the film was OK but it did go downhill towards the end (although it did briefly pick up when Lance Henriksen put in an appearance).

I found myself thinking that if it wasn't for the meteor storm, then things would have been much better if the rescue team had never turned up. All they seemed to do was wreak havoc (albeit mainly unintentionally) wherever they went by interfering in things that were best left alone. Combine that with a some serious plot inconsistencies and you end up with a film that didn't live up to its predecessor.

Overall though, if you haven't seen either of the films and you like sci-fi/horror then it is a good buy. Just don't expect too much from it.
