4.0 out of 5 stars Sodom - Sodom, 17 May 2006
By
This review is from: Sodom (Audio CD)
This self titled album is something like the 17th studio release of SODOM's 22 year recording career. However, its the first for a while, their previous release being 2001's `M-16′ , a landmark album that left bullet holes in the ears of just about every true trasher around.

The first 3 songs kick the new album off in terrific fashion. Opener `Blood on Your Lips' blasts out of the blocks like a jet car, whilst `Wanted Dead' picks up the pace even further, threatening to launch the listener into orbit!

this is my favourite cut on the album , and believe me you would not want to be found alive after hearing this. Its the fastest song on the album and shows the ultimate qualities that SODOM have possessed over their lasting spell in the thrash metal premier league.

Other early highlights include `City of God' ... a killer track, boasting a ferocious lead riff and a memorable lead chorus. `Bibles and Guns' continues in a similar vain with frontman Tom Angelripper's famous roar now starting to split the ear drums as usual.

`Axis of Evil' slows the tempo down a little (and I mean only a little) and relates to a quote by American president George W. Bush. Another strong track and possibly the most accesible for the thrash virgins out there.

Its back to the lightning fast pace with next track `Lords of Depravity', yet another angry thrasher from the pits of sodomized hell. The song title also serves as the title of SODOM's recent DVD release, a reflection of the bands career to date...check it out if you can!

The quality levels aren't quite maintained right to the close as the last four tracks leave little impression compared to the first chunk of the album. Thats not to say they're bad tracks, its just the first half of the album hits you like a juggernaut and leaves you recovering on the floor for a while!

It is great to have bands like SODOM, KREATOR and SLAYER still around delivering the goods in 2006. The music may be predictible, but lets face it, no other bands make thrash metal in quite the same way as those three. This album is another slab of quality, angry, true thrash metal which is an essential addition to the collection for any fan of the above mentioned unholiest of trinities!

5.0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming, 20 Aug 2006
This review is from: Sodom (Audio CD)
Best metal I have heard in recent years (erm, that would be 30 years all told). This is utterly ferocious stuff, but with good, albeit harsh, singing and great hooks and lyrics. Listenable throughout and fantastic in the car - just be careful with the accelerator !

I bought this album after listening to Axis of Evil which was on a compilation CD attached to a well known metal mag, and Im glad I did. Despite them having been around for a few years this to me has been a breath of fresh air for myself. It would be enough to get this album for Axis of Evil and Laydown the Law alone, superb tracks, great band.
