The last album from simakDIALOG, "Patahan", released back in 2007 was a very pleasant surprise. So I had high hopes for the latest installment of their jazz odyssey when it popped through the letterbox. Hopes that were more than realised as the Indonesian progressive jazz outfit worked their way through another very impressive set of tunes.

They've been on the go since 1993 and have racked up oodles of Indonesian music awards for their first four albums, deservedly so, as their unique take on modern jazz is quite something. With their cultural background, they bring a different perspective to jazz with an array of Sundanese kendang percussion driving excellent compositions like 'Salilana Pertama (Forever Parts 1 and 2)' in exciting and breathtaking directions.

Keyboardist Riza Ahmad is responsible for all the compositions, and he produced the album, so he must be picked out for particular praise. However, the combined instrumental dexterity of the whole band is a sound to behear. Take a listen to a song like 'Karuhun (To Elders)', and it may change your view of progressive jazz forever.
