5.0 out of 5 stars Big Mac on fire, 23 Feb 2011
This review is from: Newcastle United Big Match [DVD] (DVD)
This is a good addition to an excellent series featuring highlights of some of Newcastle United's games featured on The Big Match between 1969 and 1983.

The selection is dominated by Malcolm Macdonald. We see Big Mac's debut in 1971 when he puts three past Liverpool, and he features in many of the other games here to remind us of how he well suited the position of the old big Number Nine up front. (One of the extras shows his five goals in England's 5-0 win over Cyprus. Surprisingly he only scored one goal in 13 other international appearances).

All the featured games are at home so we see how the ground develops - at first it is just a pile up of people in the open air, then a building site, and then the devleopment of various stands which many Geordie regulars may find interesting.

A recommended DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane, 22 Nov 2011
This review is from: Newcastle United Big Match [DVD] (DVD)
If you grew up in the 70's as I did and are a Newcastle United fan you'll enjoy this.
The quality is decent and watching the industrial tackling and seeing the development of St. James Park through the 70's definitely brought back memories.
But be warned. This is "The Big Match" and not Tyne Tees'"Shoot", so there is a little something missing, nemely the North-East perspective.
Nevertheless, seeing Big Wyn Davies shoulder charge Sunderland's Montgomery into the net in front of the Gallowgate, or seeing goal upon goal smashed in my Supermac are worth the money for the dvd.
Other things can be rediscovered such as the great passing of Terry Hibbitt and the beautiful wing play of Micky Burns.
Towards the end it does get a little depressing when seeing the side battle against the likes of Charlton in the old second division but it also puts today's "woes" under mike Ashley into perspective.
So, all in all, slip in the dvd, take a trip down memory lane and enjoy yourself.

growing up in the southern tv region,I used to pray that after the main match which for us was always london teams,we would get hugh johns and west brom, or gerald sindstat and tommy doc,s stone roses man utd, and my no1 choice was newcastle at st james park.UNLIKE boring arsenal, or the straw dog teams of norwich, (bristol city), southampton, The BACK DROP LOOKED LIKE THE FILM ZULU! check out the kids and courting couples behind the goal, pure likely lads.IF I could of watched football anywhere it would be there! how i would run around the rec with my pals, wanting to be bobby moncur, mickey burns, terry, terry, hibbett.irving nattress. BUT in my wildest dreams could i match SUPERMAC! JIMMY HILL SAYS after his liverpool debut "i wouldn,t let him take the penalty the pressure would be to much!" as he ,s carried off the field like a bow legged boxer, having scored the best debut hat-trick ever! goosebumps 40 odd years on! his super charged bionic man run and goal against norwich, has to be seen several times over and has been! Please tell me modern newcastle fans,? in the town of get carter, and the place where the krays were kicked back where they belong, do you allow a pay day loan company on your beautiful shirts!.Having read other comments,I would just like to add that 70s EGO,s were massive, but every team had some players you could like, and these type of dvds are the only football i watch in 2013! fans of clubs who allow identity, and sense of place,to be sold for a place in the premier league are not people i want to stand along side! A.M.F. NEWCASTLE UTD THE BIG MATCH, PROMT SERVICE THROUGH AMAZON,CO,UK,VERY HAPPY!

A very enjoyable, nostalgic DVD with some quite frankly stunning goals (primarily it has to be said by the power house that was Malcolm "Supermac" MacDonald. However, you can also enjoy the crossing ability of Micky Burns and the superb passing skills of Terry Hibbitt. Some very enjoyable games are featured, including Supermac's home debut against Liverpool and some proper hammerings of Chelsea and West Ham.
The links between games are a bit rough in the editorial cut but then it's the football we are really interested in (although it's always a pleasure to hear and see Brian Moore). As a previous reviewer points out, this is not "Shoot !" but it does have Roger Tames commentating and sounding half good at it (which surprised me because I have always thought he was rubbish).
I am slighty disappointed that the 1986 live "Big Match" against West Ham which Newcastle won 4 - 0 (with goals from the likes of Andy Thomas and featuring Paul Goddard up front) is not included but you can't have everything !
I am also assuming that the BBC had the rights to show most of the Keegan playing years, hence their omission here.
Or, is it possible there's a "Volume 2" on the way ?
One star dropped for the rough and ready editing and for arousing my suspicion that they have games from later in the 80s still in the archives which they could have featured. At just over a fiver though, it's a pretty good deal.
And it was "goal machine" Peter Withe who was credited in the commentary with catching a pitch invading dog (why was it dogs seemed to get on the pitch every other week, back in those days ?)
