5.0 out of 5 stars Gladiator remastered: know your product
Unreserved five stars for PQ on the remastered edition (the AQ was always excellent).

Now what you really want to know: how can you be sure you're getting the new edition, and not the shoddy first release? As of 9 September, NBC Universal UK have confirmed three things:

1. They have started shipping the new edition to retailers, but it's up to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a dissapointing transfer for such a great film
As the title suggests, this is a great film but has unfortunately been butchered on blu ray. The picture quality is absolutely dreadful, the studio has applied so much DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) to try to remove grain that they have actually removed a lot of detail in the picture itself! Crucially though, Ridley Scott filmed this with the intention of many of the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Minimus Quality, 8 Jun 2002
By A Customer
The fact that Ridley Scott's dumbing down of such a rich image of classical Rome became so popular and revered shows the cynical nature of modern Hollywood. Despite the detailed and spectacular Roman setting, this blockbuster is strictly formulaic and the 'plot' continually gropes for the lowest common denominator rendering the film artistically worthless. One star for the opening battle and the recreation of the Colosseum and one star for an impressive DVD package. No star for insulting our intelligence and reaping our misplaced gratitude.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bloody but very dull, 8 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Okay, hands up all those who think that Ridley Scott's first 3 films are 3 of the best ever made? Me too. So what happened? 'Someone to Watch Over Me', 'Legend', 'GI Jane'? Perhaps some aliens replaced him with the directorial equivalent of a 'Stepford Wife'? Whatever, I came to this feeling in the hope that this really would put him back on the rails. But I was wrong.
I have a degree in roman history, and although I have nothing at all against manipulating history (that's what history is there for!), it irked me to be given the impression that Commodus reigned for about 6 months, when in fact he lasted 12 years - not bad for a supposed nutter. I could even cope with the fact that had a beard (the real one that is), but it was going too far to change the manner and meaning of his death....
Those criticisms aside, which don't really matter, the film was so weak. Where exactly was the story? Oh yes, Maximus falls foul of a new emperor, is left for dead, becomes a gladiator and finds himself in Rome with the chance to kill the monster. Taxing and dramatic stuff. So, what has happened to Ridley Scott? 'Blade Runner' is a fantastic film, mainly because the 'villain' becomes more human than the 'hero'. It is an action film about people which can't fail to move you. So, what do we get in 'Gladiator'? A monster who is just that, with no redeeming features and who is as shallow as you can get. And a hero who is just that, and who is as shallow as you can get. Great! I could have coped with it if it hadn't been so interminably long? How long can you string out a film with almost no story? Ask Ridley!
Not as bad or boring as 'Forest Gump', but that is not a compliment, believe me. This film is the most expensive turkey I have ever seen, and unlike the one I have lined up for Christmas, this one got stuck in my throat and gave me indigestion. Avoid it people - watch Spartacus instead, now that is a good film, and even longer if you like that sort of thing....
