5.0 out of 5 stars a truly seminal work of art
I first heard these tracks during the summer of 1990. I was stood knee-deep in mud in Wiltshire when a friend told me that Eat Static were playing in the nextdoor field. I hadn't heard of them before, but I soon discovered that they were the Ozrics' rhythm section - completely electronic, without any hint of a flute, stringed instrument or 20 minute guitar solo. 5.0 out of 5 stars a truly seminal work of art, 7 Feb. 2005
This review is from: Prepare Your Spirit (Audio CD)
I first heard these tracks during the summer of 1990. I was stood knee-deep in mud in Wiltshire when a friend told me that Eat Static were playing in the nextdoor field. I hadn't heard of them before, but I soon discovered that they were the Ozrics' rhythm section - completely electronic, without any hint of a flute, stringed instrument or 20 minute guitar solo. This I thought could only be a good thing. And, sure enough, they exceeded expectations as they began to pump out what I can only describe as progressive hardcore techno - a forerunner to psytrance (remember, this was in the days before before jungle, drum 'n' bass, gabber etc.) Back then, I'd never heard anything like it. Eat Static were way ahead of the game, creating bleeps, breaks and beats that went way beyond the wildest imaginations of any musicians this side of Alpha Centauri. What made them really special was the fact that they were one of the few acts single-mindedly focussing on drum and bass. The rave scene was saturated with soppy wash-cycle acid and happy-clappy piano anthems, but along with the likes of N-joi, Orbital and The Prodigy, Eat Static were churning out tracks with a hard sci-fi edge and a stomping tribal beat, setting the scene for a whole host of psytrancers to follow: Wizzy Noise, Transwarp Development Project, Qubenzis Psy Audio... To my mind, they've never topped this album - it captures them in the butt-kicking prime of their youth.

Any of you out there who can't remember quite where Eat Static fit into it all - then listen to this. They conquered at Glasto 2000 in 'The Glade' and this CD gets the whole spirit This is Brilliant. A double CD full of alien invasion, brain implant madness. In the words of one sample on the CD "I've been planning this moment for years" - you'd better beleive it too. If you ever doubted where Eat Static were going then repent - or die...
