Saw this film when I was very young. Have not seen it since on screen, but I was Surprised and delighted to find that I could purchase it as a DVD through Amazon. It goes back to 1935 when released, with the young Gary Cooper & Franchet Tone [was that his real name or stage name?] and that fine old actor and former cricketer Sir C Aubrey Smith. The transfer of a 1935 film to DVD is very good and the soundtrack is the same. Although it is in black and white as most films were in those days it ranks alongside other oldies like - "Gunga Din", "Charge of the Light Brigade", "They Died With Their Boots ON", "Captain Blood", "The Drum", "The Four Feathers" These were all action adventure films which I still enjoy watching today. Cooper was a very watchable actor of the old school alaways seemed a very hesitant hero i.e. Sergeant York and "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Of course it was very accurate in depicting the Indian soldiers especially the resplendant Bengal Lancers. The shame is they dont make films like these ncwadays. although the pageantry is likely still there but no longer the actors of the caliber of Cooper and others of his ilk.

Dictator's Favourite,

A fantastic movie! The British Raj at it's height. Hitler loved this movie as it represented an empire with a force of 200,000 men controlled a nation of millions. He wanted to emulate that. I love this movie. It has humour between the two leading men. It is not gung ho in any way. Thoroughly recommended

wonderful, if dated and reality definitely on hold, but great acting - fantastic scenerey - real stars with a real story - uncomfortable with the imperialism and ye olde empire aspect of this film- but from the opening scene to the last and saddest farewell the pace is unrelentless and despite the antiquity of the film technology - the slyness of the tongue and the almost self-mocking aspect is very modern - this film is funny in places and unlike other imperialistic films of that time very little romance, which for Hollywood , was rare - whether that is a good thing or not is debatable- the derring do is very well done as is Cooper, certainly for people who haven't seen this actor in different roles it is an eye-opener as he extraxcts the urine from the pompous and arrogant - and his frustrations with his fellow officers are so evident - he is very good and proves his acting skills - the film itself does and doesn't seem to take itself seriously - but its message very strong -a film perfect for a rainy sunday afternoon with the curtains drawn and a comfy chair- reminiscing of days bygone

picture quality & sound a bit iffy but what a great story - and heroic ending - can we ever beat the 1930's

I first saw this at its original showing and enjoyed it very much. Now I'm 86 and I feel that the snake scene, which was a highlight, doesn't show a cobra because it's not hoode and is not really shown clearly. Neverthless iit was enjoyable after all those years1
