4.0 out of 5 stars Callas at her wonderful best
Views on Callas's voice and delivery are divided but there is something about that voice that is quite haunting. Allied with superstars such as Gobbi and you soon forget that this is an old analogue recording. A stunning price for a piece of classical history.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This is not just an analogue recording in the sense of the original master tape - it has been re-recorded from vinyl! Listen to the closing seconds of Act III and you can hear the stylus travel to the centre of the record and then the pickup arm returning. There's nothing wrong with analogue per se but with this recording you will also get the rumble, hiss and limited dynamic range of vinyl. It's not even a particularly good deck they used for the re-recording. But hey, it's cheap.

I found that this is certainly the finest recording of Tosca with undoubtably the best opera singers of the last century

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, moving and historic. An Ideal cast., 22 Mar 2013

This is for me and many others the quintessential 'Tosca' recording. Yes one can pick at the recording quality compared with what is possible today, but the sound quality is perfectly good if one is not a passing bat. Personally I heartily dislike every note perfect recordings as this is not possible in the Opera House or concert Hall. Then we come to the cast and few casts can match the range of talents that this trio can command. Callas is 'Tosca' as Tito Gobbi is 'Scarpia' Guiseppi Di Stephano is in rich and beautiful tones here with a team that had worked together and often. One might have wished for perfection and had Tullio Serafin at the baton....but Di Stabata is very good.

This is the base line on which all other 'Tosca's are judged and one to which I return often for sheer joy of music and drama, no cold icy note perfect perfectionism, just genius in performance. Enjoy......I need not add that at this price heaven is for everyone.
