I previously used a standard definition Flip Mino for about a year and I was entirely happy with it given that I wanted to use it for a specific purpose. Having just purchased an HD MIno I can say that I am once again extremely happy with my purchase.

Having a clear idea in mind about the potential uses to be made of the Mino is key to the process of review and to user satisfaction. There is no point in buying a Mino (HD or SD) if you want to own a camera which will provide best video or audio quality for all purposes. Clearly there are much better video cameras for most video recording situations. The Mino does, however, have a few key features which make it best of breed for certain purposes.

I use the Mino to record the exercise I take outside. When I jog I take the Mino. When I walk I take the Mino. It is small and easy to use and so switching on and off, and starting and stopping recording, is simple, even when running. Also it is very light, small and thin. I don't look at the viewfinder, I just point in the general direction and record what I want. More importantly, however, the audio recording facility under normal and exercise conditions is absolutely excellent when the required audio is a user narrative of the video being captured. The position of the microphone seems to be optimised for that type of situation. Wind noise doesn't ever seem to be a problem. It will also pick up bird noises very clearly. As a video camera companion for the jogger blogger it appears to be the best that is available at the moment and I have tried quite a few which cost quite a bit more than the Mino. I should say that I don't find the zoom of any use to me given the purpose and use to which I put the camera. I also don't use the built in software much. I simply import it into iMovie on my Mac and with minimum editing it is ready for use. The on-board USB connector is a bonus but I wouldn't mind if it didn't have that.

As a slip in the pocket camera where the ultimate in picture quality is not important, the Mino is excellent. As a means of creating perfectly usable ad hoc videos to upload to YouTube, it is excellent. As a means of producing a family video which will capture every detail look elsewhere and take advantage of the added facilities of more expensive cameras and careful zooming and careful microphone placement.

If you have a clear vision of the purpose or use to which you want to make of the video camera then the Mino could be just right for you. For certain situations I can recommend it unreservedly. Don't, however, expect it to do the same job as a much more expensive multi function video camera - that is being unreasonable.

Update - four months on. Observation of video quality obtained makes me feel that under low light conditions the SD Mino copes better. I also previously used an SD Mino and so I have experience of both. Under high contrast situations outside the SD Mino may also cope better. I am still however delighted with my HD Mino.

Colour Name: BlackVine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
Up until now, I was using the video-recording facility from my camera which produced decent video results, but awful sound quality.

So I looked forward to trying the FLIP. Well, the sound quality is much clearer and louder than from my camera, and the videos themselves are great quality. But the screen is tiny and I found it difficult to get what I wanted in the frame unless I stood quite far back from the subject. A very steady hand is also needed to avoid blurring, and um... a lot of my clips ended up in the trash bin :)

But I do have a small basic tripod, and when I used that, the videos were amazing. However, I don't want to lug a tripod around with me, so I need to practise steadying my hands more! I like the simplicity of use; just turn it on, hit the red button, and you're set. Once you've finished recording, you can play directly from the unit or delete it. There's a built-in usb connector that pops out at the flick of a switch, so you don't need to remember to take anything out with you aside from the Flip.

The size is good, a little smaller than a Zune 80 mp3 player and about the same length as a Nokia 6300 but twice the thickness. I would have liked to have been able to adjust the recording quality to get more on it, but you can't. It's fixed at around 1-hour of high quality video with no option to change the settings.

But it's still a great little gadget, portable, simple to use (the software is a doddle to get round) and the battery life is excellent. Highly recommended for an all-in-one option.

Great little product. What I love is that you dont need any tapes, any leads, any connectors. Inevitably, in the real world you only need one of these things missing and that spontaneous piece of home video simply doesnt get captured. The flip has it all- software stored on the device itself, integral USB connector that flips out transfers the data and charges. 60 minutes of HD onboard should be more than enough for most needs, although I guess for a longer holiday you might need to consider hooking up to a PC to download/charge. Overall, I love it. Anything to Improve: better image stablity control- this is a small unit, hard to hold steady. But it does attach to tripod easily enough. Oh yes, and its HD and it comes in a really cool box. The ipod of videocameras. Go get one.

I ran across the Sahara Desert in April 2010 in the worlds toughest footrace the Marathon des Sables. I wanted to record video diaries of this endurance event and I needed something extremely lightweight and small as I was carrying all my equipment and supplies on my back in a race. The Flip Mino really delivered. My personal video clips are crystal clear, the sound is amazing, I have huge panoramas of the desert and brilliant close ups of me talking. What amazed me more is the battery live. I was worried it would die in 2 days but it lasted over a whole week of me turning it on and off all day.
If you are out and about and need to capture clear video but don't want something bulky this is the perfect tool. It is also so easy to upload to your computer once youre back at home or even in an internet cafe. The only downside might be using it at night where the camera light isnt great.
I would buy this over any small video camera.

Superb quality sound and vision - all in a neat little discrete package.
I'm on the long road of training to eventually become a british sign language / english interpreter and all our evidence videos have to be filmed. My goodness! How easy this little point-and-press gadget made things for me!
I have no worries about uploading the films to my computer (I'm on a MAC), simply flip open the USB connector and voila! Stick it in the MAC and everything uploads at the click of a button!

There was no need to load any extra software - everything is fully compatible with all my other software programmes (realplayer and quicktime).

The ease of use and superb quality of this little Flip MINO camcorder was so fantastic, by the end of my latest sign language course, fellow class students sacked off trying to overcome all the difficulties they were having with the Centre's fullsized vidcams and all borrowed mine instead! The vision and sound quality is far better than all the expensive cameras at the centre even! One particular classmate ended up ordering one for her birthday. If us two gadget-scared blondes can use this will full effect, you can too!

I simply cannot recommend this item highly enough. An all round great performer.

Use with a "gorillapod" tripod and create your own professional mini-films!! Superb!

Second Mino I have received as a gift. First failed within a year (not through rough use). Second appeared to fail but in fact the unit can become frozen and there is a reset procedure for it, which worked.

For the Mino HD, image quality is great however I personally came to dislike the 16:9 format in favour of the 4:3 ratio on the older one. This is very subjective, when (e.g.) capturing my young children doing something like dancing or riding bikes, I felt that I had to work hard to ensure I got not only their heads / faces but also what they were engaged in.

I think that the Minos are great little gadgets but would advise you to review the range carefully before buying a particular model.

Very great product if you look for portability, usability and good image quality. Easy to use, 3 sec for start up so you won't miss any good shot. Image quality HD is very good on daytime, a bit darker at night time, if you will shoot often at night time, look for another product, otherwise is excellent. When you plug it to your Mac it will automatically switch to Iphoto for download, and as it has a USB inside the hardware, it will charge up when plugged to the pc usb, you do not need to worry to carry all the extras (usb cable, charger). Good battery time, you will forget to recharge. If you want to find a minus point, they could have improved the screen (too small for shooting and reviewing).

Very stylish. Very compact. Very easy to use. Bought the Flip Mino HD as a Christmas present for my partner, who fell in love with a similar product in use by her daughter when she visited us last summer from the USA - but she thinks the Flip MIno HD is even neater. Very impressed.

If you simply want to be able to shoot gorgeous looking footage quick and fast you won't find a better camera. It couldn't be simpler to use, simply turn it on and press record. As far as loading your footage onto a computer its the easiest I've ever used, all it takes is plugging in the USB connector and the software included does the rest. When I purchased this item I just wanted a neat little efficient camera that I could take with me anywhere, would get great footage and wouldn't be a nightmare to capture/edit with and I got exactly what I paid for.

Can't say more than that.

Just bought this product for my holidays, it is small enough for what I want as I dont want anything too large to carry around. Shame the memory isnt expandable though.

One criticism is that it is very plasticy, and would have been a lot better if the chrome was actual chrome/metal and not shiny plastic as this gives the item a very cheap feel. I think the description is a bit misleading. Also, I know its not important but the shiny surface gets rather annoying as it marks very easly with fingerprint / grease etc.
