5.0 out of 5 stars Contents of this box set and comparison with other box sets, 15 Dec. 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Händel Opera Collection (Audio CD)
This box set contains the recordings of eight Handel operas - "Rinaldo", "Tamerlano", and "Serse" with La Grande Ecurie at la Chambre du Roy conducted by Malgoire; "Giulio Cesare" with the New York Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Rudel; "Rodelinda" with La Stagione, Schneider and Sigiswald Kuijken; "Alessandro" and "Partenope" both with La Petite Bande conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken; and "Lotario" with Il Complesso Barocco conducted by Alan Curtis.
For those interested in rapidly building up a collection of these operas, this box set does not contain any of the operas in the box set of six Handel operas brought out by Il Complesso Barocco under Alan Curtis.
There is, however, more overlap with the box set of three Handel operas conducted by Rene Jacobs, namely "Rinaldo" with the Freiburger Barockorchester and "Giulio Cesare" with Concerto Koln.

8 Operas of Handel, the performances here of Lotario (although w/ cuts; there is no complete recording of Lotario), Partenope, and Alessandro have not been surpassed by any other recordings. (Recently the performance of Alessandro has been exceeded by the new recording with Max Cencic on Decca.)The performace of Tamerlano comes very close to the top of the list too, (just under the Petrou version on MDG and also under the Gardiner recording as well). The roles taken by Renè Jacobs and Henri Ledroit have however been strangely inverted, Jacobs should have sung the role of Tamerlano and Ledroit the role of Andronico and not vice versa as on this recording, otherwise this is a very fine recording and the death sequence of Bajazet is unsurpassed here. The recording of Rinaldo has a splendid cast and the singing is unsurpassed even by the 2 other more recent recordings by Hogwood and Jacobs. The problem is however that the orchestral approach is very restricted and the dramatic intensity is very constrained, otherwise this is an EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL rendition of this masterpiece. It's like a minature pastel instead of a grand oil painting as the Hogwood version is, but it is preferable in many ways to both the Jacobs and the Hogwood versions for the beauty of the singing, especially Paul Esswood as Goffredo, Carolyn Watkinson as Rinaldo and Illena Cotrubas as Almirena. Only the recordings of Giulio Cesare and Rodelinda included here are of inferior quality. Overall the performance of Serse is also very good with some exceptional moments of singing. This is therefore a GREAT SET, no matter what any other critic might say. 5/8 operas of unsurpassed beauty and delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super Collection, 5 Jan. 2013

As some one who knows the common works and enjoys them, this was a fantastic purchase. Not only some of the more well known works , but a good selection of the lesser known works.
Though that the quality might be about average, taking in the price and the sheer number of CD's, but was totally wrong. All the CD's are of a very good sound quality.

Would totally recommend anyone to purchase this box set.

Very good, impeccable voices, although some opera's rare rather similar to each other and there's not enough choir work for my liking. Very happy with it, though.
