wow,
This review is from: God Of This City (MP3 Download)
I saw Bluetree perform their 'signature' song 'God of this City' at an event in Birmingham 2 or 3 years ago and was interested enough to put their album on my wishlist. It took a while before someone bought it me, but if I'd known it was this good I would have bought it myself sooner. To my taste God of this City is not the strongest song on the album but it is excellent, and it is testemony to it that so many well known worship leaders have covered it since - including Mat Redman. I have to say the Bluetree version still stands out as the best. 'Lifes noise' is a great opener, and 'God's Plan' and 'For you' are lively and impossible not to sing along with. The more contemplative songs such as 'each day' and 'river' are beautiful and thought provoking. The highlight of the album is the revamp of the old hymn 'When I survey' which builds throughout from simple minimal instrumetnal backing during the first verse to full on rocking out by the final one. It builds to a triuphant, euphoric proclamation of gratitude to God which made the hairs on my neck stand on end. As a worship leader I wish I could get my band to do this song like this. So often I feel the quality of Christian music is poor compared to secular equivalents, but this is solid Christian material with the highest quality songwriting, composition and delivery - buy it - you won't be disappointed.

Puts some meat into Christian music...,

This review is from: God of This City (Audio CD)
...ok, actually a lot of 'meat'. I got this CD from the church I was attending, as Bluetree were playing there. Needless to say, these guys were a nice surprise for a Sunday morning! They're a good live band and it's great to see the added DJ mix work well into the regular music. The bass and drums work very well, the guitars are good, and the added DJ mix is a welcome addition to the album, reminding me of Poets of the Fall. The reason why I give it 4 stars and not 5 is, however, that I think it is lacking in the lyrics department on a few of the songs. But with a little more time, lets see what else these guys can come up with. God of This City (which has a great story behind it in the StandOut International info pack as to why it is on the album) is the best track for me in terms of music and lyrics and as a whole the album itself is a great addition to a music collection. |
