This review is from: Lay Your Burden Down (Audio CD)
This is a really good record that features not only good-time Zydeco but also more thoughtful songs. The opening track "When the levee breaks" gets us off to a cracking start, it features slide guitar from Sonny Landreth and for me it sounds much better than anything on his own recent CD "From the reach". There are good covers of songs by Bruce Springsteen - "Back In Your Arms", JJ Grey & Mofro - "The Wrong Side" and even a Zydeco/Reggae hybrid with a cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah". There is also a version of one of my favourite Captain Beefheart songs "Too much time" - great. It's not all covers though with the band contributing five songs, including the lovely closing ballad "Finding my way back home".
