5.0 out of 5 stars Cambodian surf rock band actually visit Cambodia, 19 Jun. 2009

Dengue Fever are an astonishing Los Angeles Cambodian surf rock band. They imported a genuine classically trained Cambodian pop idol, Chhom Nimol, and set about making music that does not sound like anybody else. It's inspired by Cambodian pop music from the 60s and 70s, but has a modern vibe as well. Sleepwalking Through the Mekong is a DVD/CD set that helps set their music in context.

The DVD is a documentary filmed as the band went to Cambodia to visit the country, play their music, collaborate with Cambodian musicians, and tell something of the story of the music that inspired them. This is a bitter story in some ways; those singers and musicians were mostly killed by the Khmer Rouge. But overall the documentary is charming, engaging and unusual. The band travel around, meet musicians, locals and schoolchildren, and play to thousands in the middle of a shanty town.

The accompanying 17 track CD release is a sort-of soundtrack. It's a mixture of new and reworked Dengue Fever tracks, some of the singers and collaborations from their tour, and some of the original 60s sounds. Some of the singing is in English but much is in Khmer. The CD is a great introduction to Dengue Fever and the music of Cambodia. Of course, I want to find more music by Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Serey Sothea now!

If you know the music of Dengue Fever, this gives you an idea of how they came up with the concept of the band, together with a great documentary of them interacting with Cambodian culture. It s a very open approach and they really connect to the people, it s a "party atmosphere" experiment. I think the highlight was the blind man singing his story of surviving through the war period. The jam at the school is also very emotional. Definitely recommend it!

I first heard the music a a festival and fell in love with Nihmol, her looks and voice. The film hoever gives a real background to the Khmer rock background and the suppression of Pol Pot. Don't worry though it is not Killing Fields the musical but more a tribute to Cambodian musical history. CD has been in my car for 6 months and is a complete anti-dote to every radio station that doesn't have Andy Kershaw on it.
