Before the formation of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Dave Brubeck wrote a number of solo pieces. These were influenced by Dave's classical knowledge, and many of them have a Bach-like 2-part basis. ('Two part contention' is a good example). Fats Waller was also an influence, some phrases of 'When I was young' show a strong reminiscence.
These must have been formative years for Dave Brubeck, the poly-tonal influence is already present, and poly-rythms (like 5/4) would not be far behind.
If you play an acoustic piano, 'Brubeck plays Brubeck' contains some excellent pieces to learn; and the recording quality is very good.
