Great value for the money,
This review is from: Canon LiDE 700F photo (9600dpi Advanced CCD technology), film and document Scanner (Personal Computers)
Not had this long but it seems great. I took the plunge based on reviews I found elsewhere and ordered it here despite the poor comments on Amazon. It arrived in good condition and was up and running in about 15 minutes. Power comes via USB so less stuff to plug in too.First of all, at least one of the previous reviewers is inaccurate. Using the Canon software the scanner can output at up to 1200dpi in reflective/non film mode if you bother to investigate the Advanced section of the driver software. It has lots of controls and can very quickly produce a decent quality image. There is an option to scan in 16 bit if necessary and lots of other tweaking buttons to play with. The software installed easily on my Mac running Leopard. The machine is also supported by VueScan. With that you can scan at higher resolutions up to the advertised 9600 dpi. I probably won't do film on it as I have a film scanner and the setup does look fiddly in comparison but will no doubt work ok when you get familiar with it (and again should achieve a high dpi if you go beyond the Auto driver settings).

Bought primarily for copying slides that are starting to deteriorate, I was basically after retaining what images I had, but I was amazed at the sheer quality of the scanned images. The online instructions are very easy to follow and copying time is very quick. One great advantage is not requiring a power cable - all the power this machine needs is supplied via the USB lead. The only drawback in my opinion is the lack of a slide holder - films need to be removed from mounts which is a real pain when the mounts are of the old card type which can't be fitted back together afterwards. But apart from this one small niggle - A LITTLE GEM! Well done once more Canon.

The Canon LiDE 700F Scanner,

This review is from: Canon LiDE 700F photo (9600dpi Advanced CCD technology), film and document Scanner (Personal Computers)
I bought this scanner to replace a Canon 8000F scanner which had given good service for a number of years. There is still nothing wrong with that scanner but I recently upgraded my computer to one which runs under Windows 7 64 bit OS and there are no updated drivers available to let the scanner operate with this OS.Although it is wider than the 8000F, the 700F has a lower profile and so appears a less bulky and sleeker machine. Installation was straightforward and the scanner was soon ready to be used. The software includes Canon's own MP Navigator scanning interface as well as Photostudio 6. While I tended to use the Photostudio interface with the 8000F, I now make far greater use of Canon's MP Navigator which I find extremely flexible, allowing me to scan directly into a new Word document or directly into pdf format documents. When scanning into Word I find that the OCR is much improved over that which was associated with the old Photostudio software. I have yet to test Photostudio 6 in this aspect. So, as far as scanning documents is concerned this performs brilliantly. However, for a supposed film scanner I find the 700F somewhat less than satisfactory in the manner of actually handling the film. In fact to my mind the method of scanning verges on the eccentric. There is no way of fixing a strip of film in the film holder and actually aligning the frames is not easy and it took me a number of goes to actually capture the selected frame. It seems suitable only for scanning a few frames at a time. But then, perhaps I just need more practice at using the equipment. This point apart, however, I have been very pleased with scanner. As a flexible piece of kit which can handle documents and books with ease, scanning into variety of formats I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Nice scanner - shame about the negative holder,

Only had this for a few days but generally impressed. That is apart from the method of scanning negatives, which is primitive. The film just lays loosely in the holder, when in other makes it is held firmly. You have to scan one frame at a time - the Epson equivalent can recognise frames, so once set up you can leave it. Still you do get used to it and after 40 negatives I have now got it down to a fine art - the resulting images are wortth the effort. Luckily I did my slides on the old Epson so don't have that to worry about.Unit is very light and really appreciate USB power supply. Recommended unless you hsve slides to scan.

Good in Windows, Haven't got it working in Linux,

My wife bought this scanner and set it up for her laptop with its Windows XP install and the XP install of our desktop. My wife is studying for a PhD in Art History and she needed a scanner that could1) scan high quality productions from art books so that she could create reproductions for assignments, and 2) create multi-page high quality documents from scanned images and text pages with associated OCR. The scanner does achieves these goals well. The facility that allows you to move aside the flap makes scanning thick books (or in my wife's case, bulky art show catalogues) much easier than with our old scanner. Also, the fact that it plugs straight into a USB port for power and communication with the PC make life easier again. That said, we have not yet tried the film scanner, though we plan to do that soon. Also, I was slightly annoyed after she bought it because I have been unable to get it to work with Ubuntu Linux - there do not seem to be any easily accessible drivers to get it working there. Hopefully Canon and the Ubuntu team sort this out eventually because the scanner would be much more useful to me if it worked well across platforms. All of this said, it is quick and produces far higher quality digital images than the all-in-ones that I have recently had the displeasure to work with.

I bought this to replace an old Canon LiDE 70 as it is no longer supported and there were no 64bit drivers. Amazon despatched the item promptly and it arrived in perfect condition. Set up in Windows 7 (64bit) was simple and I was up and running within a few minutes. I started scanning in some old photos and found the multiple photo scan feature a real time saver. The only problem I have had so far is that, for some reason, the software won't recognise four photos of the size that I am scanning, so I have to load them three at a time. Not a real problem, just a bit odd as the three photos take up the same linear dimensions as the four would on the platen. The advanced features provide a lot of user control and, although I recognise that this is not going to give professional quality scans, it is certainly good enough for me, and I am quite picky!

Not Canon Standard,

I liked the fact that there is no separate power supply, and that the power comes from the computer via a USB cable. It is fast. Scanning quality is good too. Options are excellent. Dedicated software is very user friendly. BUT the unit I got was faulty - it scanned at an angle rather than parallel to the edge of paper, and thus had to return it. Pre-production problems? I don't know but certainly not the typical Canon workmanship. Also would have preferred to see a dedicated slide holder - the film scanner is fiddly.

This scanner is great apart from the negative holder for scanning which is very poor. I am a Canon fan but I think they have shortchanged purchasers with a sub standard add on.Canon LiDE 700F photo (9600dpi Advanced CCD technology), film and document Scanner

This was bought as a replacement to an older Canon flat bed scanner. Using Windows 7 (64 bit) and Picasa 3 to save 100 year old photographs, glass negatives and 35mm negatives I am thoroughly satisfied with the results. The software is reminiscent of Photoshop Elements and I would assume to equally useful; the OCR programme was satisfactory though it was found better to choose a different font from the default and even then a test, using as a subject typeface of varying quality, required a deal of editing.

Does not scan slides,
By
This review is from: Canon LiDE 700F photo (9600dpi Advanced CCD technology), film and document Scanner (Personal Computers)
Cannot believe that some reviews (on Amazon and elsewhere) recommend this scanner for scanning slides, despite the fact that it does not scan slides. It can scan film, so if you have had slide film processed but not mounted, then you can scan that. But 'slides', meaning processed and mounted slide film, cannot be scanned by this device. Some reviewers have called this a 'niggle', which is absurd. Aside from the fact that you'll probably destroy your slides by removing them from their mounts to scan them, who would be willing to go through all that hassle?
