5.0 out of 5 stars Great re-issue of Shirley's comeback album, 20 May 2005

1970, and it was several years since Shirley Bassey had enjoyed a chart hit in her native Britain, due to her self-imposed tax exile. A lack of success with recent releases also led to the decision to take a completely new approach to how she was to record her albums. This album was the first example of her new sound - instead of the usual full orchestra, this time she would record with a basic rhythm accompaniment.
The original album was helped no end by the title track, which became one of her biggest hits, and at the time was the only Beatles song to be a bigger hit than their original. The song was 'Something', and it made #4. There were two other singles from the album - 'Sea And Sand' was actually released before 'Something', and 'What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life'. Sadly neither charted but all of the above, plus their flipsides are on the album. 'The Fool On The Hill', another Beatles song, was the 'a'-side to 'What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life' (from 'Happy Endings', but wasn't on the original album, so is thankfully included here as a bonus track. Especially important as it was, although minor, another chart hit.
The album itself was also a big chart success, making #5 and spending several months on chart. It is held in high esteem by Shirley's many fans, and I think it may possibly be the best album of her career. Every single track is a winner - it really does show off how Shirley can 'belt the best' and make any song in any style her own. Naturally there are the big ballads, a staple of her repertoire - 'Yesterday I Heard The Rain', 'You And I' (from 'Goodbye Mr Chips', 'Yesterday When I Was Young' - but they are in a somewhat different style to her earlier ballads. The highlights of this album are the big, show-type numbers, such as 'Spinning Wheel', Light My Fire' and 'What About Today'. There is also a excellent version of Sinatra's 'My Way'. This is basically a 'pop' album - something Shirley at the time hadn't done in many years.
So, to the re-issue itself. All the tracks have been digitally remastered and the album sounds better than ever. The original artwork has been wonderfully reproduced, and the design, and other pictures, are lovely. Chris White's great sleevenotes guide us through the story of the album and tell us about the tracks on it. It would have been nice to have recording dates in addition, though.
An excellent and essential CD for fans of Dame Shirley Bassey.

Digitally remastered cd of the classic 1970 release. Includes the 12 original tracks plus the bonus track of Basseys version of the Beatles "Fool On The Hill". Includes My Way, Light My Fire, Yesterday When I was Young and What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life. A great cd for fans and also new listeners wanting to see what Shirley was doing before "History Repeating".

Excellent. Mainly songs of the period rendered in usual early Bassey style, before she became a bit of 'belter' which is when I cooled a little about her. Tuneful, soulful and most enjoyable. ACD

It's a beautiful and quite emotional collection of music with Bassey singing at her very best. I think it's by far her best album.
