A FITTING TRIBUTE TO JOHN RITTER.
on 15 October 2010
When John Ritter tragically died after filming just a few episodes of series 2,their was a break in filming while the producers discussed what to do.With the blessing of John Ritters widow, they carried on with the series, dealing with Ritters loss very touchingly in two episodes Goodbye (part 1 & 2)and by adding comedian/actor David Spade and veteran James Garner to the cast.Ritters character, the father,Paul Hennessy, was obviously irreplacable,so Spade took the part of C.J,Kates slacker nephew and Garner the part of Kates sly-old-dog,sharp toungued father.Spade is very funny and Garner is always a pleasure to watch so fortunately the new casting worked. The series dynamic obviously had to change so their is slightly less emphasis on the kids than in season one,but this is still a very enjoyable season that breathes new life into what,on paper at least, looks like a sitcom cliche.Season one is still the best but this is a very worthy follow up considering the circumstances under which it was made.Sadly, the third season was one step too far with the standard of writing declining with each episode and despite the best efforts of the excellent cast,it was no surprise that it was cancelled. What is particularly impressive about the first two seasons is that all the actors are excellent and get(what seems to me anyway)a fairly equal amount of screen time, such was the excellence of the writing at the time.WARNING..REGION 1 ONLY AT THE MOMENT!
