5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Dreamy Anime, 17 Oct 2011
This review is from: Mushi-Shi - The Complete Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Mushi Shi is an experience like no other in the world of Japanese, or indeed worldwide, animation. A hypnotic, dreamlike narrative which unfolds over 26 episodes, this, in my opinion, is in the top tier of anime titles available.

Traveling with Ginko (the Mushi Shi of the title) through the various houses and villages of this beautifully realised Japan is like traveling with an old, dear friend and soaking up his wisdom. And as another reviewer so succinctly put it, the only shame is it has to come to an end. But like all the best anime titles, we are left wanting more.

A title, along with GITS, Deathnote, FMA and Cowboy Bebop I return to again and again. Excellence!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, 12 Jun 2011

This is a beautiful series! The scenery is so well animated with so much care and attention. Around the 3rd or 4th episode is the most stunning study of snow! This isn't one for people who are seeking fast action/fights or comedy. The stories are interesting in a mystical kind of way. The music is gorgeous, and the animation is very clever at times. I've only seen as far as episode 8 so far but I can't wait to watch more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proper grown up anime, 29 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mushi-Shi - The Complete Collection [DVD] (DVD)
I find it hard to describe why this is such a wonderful series but let's just say it was worth the 65 for my second hand copy. It very much reminds me of Kino's Journey in terms of tone and format (a series of fascinating self contained stories, connected only by its key protagonist).

Ginko is a Mushi Master, able to see and interact with supernatural creatures called Mushi, essentially a pure form of life existing all around but not generally known about until they cause a problem. Travelling from place to place, he studies them while trying to help those individuals inflicted . For example, one story includes a man made deaf by a snail like Mushi which feeds on sound and during hard times will sometimes abandon its own home to crawl up into the shell shaped cochlea of a person's ear. Another's intended bride has gradually disappeared into the Mushi world and in an attempt to bring her back, continues with the ceremony and with building a life for them both.

As with Kino's Journey, some stories end happily, some sadly and others just seem to sort of end. Either way, they are so beautifully told, I really didn't mind.

Beautiful, enigmatic, wise and wistful. The only problem with this collection is that it ends!
