4.0 out of 5 stars classic (mainly) US pop/soul
This is the second ACE Volume of Carol King and Gerry Goffin's work and a part of the label's remarkable series on songwriters that has included Mann and Weill, Randy Newman and Jackie DeShannon.

It follows what has evolved into an established and wonderful formula.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
The 2 stars is not for the songs but for the compilation.
Talk about lost opportunities-the original and far superior version of Honey & Wine is by the Back Porch Majority and a Hollies version is rather pointless-it wasn't even the first version issued in the UK-that was by A Fair Set.

This review is from: Honey & Wine: Another Gerry Goffin & Carole King Song Collection (Audio CD)
This is the second ACE Volume of Carol King and Gerry Goffin's work and a part of the label's remarkable series on songwriters that has included Mann and Weill, Randy Newman and Jackie DeShannon.

It follows what has evolved into an established and wonderful formula.

A handful of well known, oustanding hits, some unreleased or obscure and unheard gems, and some unexpected and illuminative alternatives to well known tracks.

The CD features some particularly enjoyable soul sides, with tracks from Ben E King, perhaps the best interpreter of their material, Chuck Jackson and Freddie Scott from the boys, Maxine Brown, the Shirelles and a new (to me) release of a classic soul ballad by Tammie Montgomery (soon to be Terrell) from the girls. Thios is not to take away any credit from some fine pop sides from Gene Pitney, ther Turtles and Marianne Faithfull.

As always the sleeve notes are detailed and well researched, with references to how the tracks made their way from demo to symphony, and the sound is excellent.

Keep it going ACE, Van McCoy next?

The 2 stars is not for the songs but for the compilation.
Talk about lost opportunities-the original and far superior version of Honey & Wine is by the Back Porch Majority and a Hollies version is rather pointless-it wasn't even the first version issued in the UK-that was by A Fair Set.
Its not too far a stretch to figure out the song having failed for both the BPM and Glenn Yarborough was sent to England with a British group in mind where it was covered both by the Hollies and Wayne Fontana in both cases as an album track.Obviouly Goffin/King realised that British Beat was selling wordwide which is why Herman's Hermits Show Me Girl had no other known version
Virtually everything here is already on release many times on Ace's own CDs but it should have been made clear on the credits that the Rising Sons is NOT the Amy group who made You're my girl-but is Taj Mahal's Rising Sons
The Rising Sons are the real mystery-there is no info I can find on the Internet other than the Amy listing which gives 2 Rising Sons singles as You're My Girl and Try To Be A Man issued here on Stateside as both A sides on one single with the only other recording as by Tony Gallo & the Risings Sons on Swan issued on a Kent CD called The Northern Soul of Swan.
Having aready issued a version of You're My Girl by the Tokens on the Something Good CD the song was revived in the 70s by Randy & the Rainbows.

The second selection of songs by Goffin and King. I grade number one with six stars. Big salute to ACE Records for this type of selections.
