5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine 5 star album, 4 Nov. 2014

This review is from: Merry Clayton (Audio CD)
Ever since this brilliant album was first released on vinyl (1971) it has remained a favourite of mine, and I'm so pleased its now available on CD. Produced by Lou Adler, and featuring a stellar line-up of musicians including Billy Preston, Jo Sample, Carole King, Clarence McDonald, David T Walker, Wilton Felder, etc, the album assembles a terrific collection of great songs to showcase Merry Claytons powerful but soulful vocals. Having provided backing vocals for iconic artists like Ray Charles (she was a Raelette), Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Joe Cocker, Neil Young, Tom Jones, etc, and duetting with Mick Jagger on `Gimme Shelter', she deserved to become a global star. Great songs, great musicians, sensational vocals!

This album is proof positive that Merry Clayton had the strength and style that deserved a distinguished solo career. That this never happened is a great shame and that story is told in the movie 'Twenty Feet From Stardom'. All the material on this album is solid soul with a fine band and arrangements. The standout track is Merry's cover of Neil Young's 'Southern Man' but she graces everything she touches. This album sits well alongside anything by Aretha or Otis and is always near my player. Love it.

this is the second reissue from Repertoire of Merry Clayton's solo 1970 records. it's not quite different from "gimme shelter": some covers, some originals, very good musicians, a great voice. not a masterpiece, but a very funny record (and not so expensive...)
