4.0 out of 5 stars Take a stunning voice and add 60 a day...., 4 Jan. 2001
This review is from: Norma Waterson (Audio CD)
You'll play this album once and quite like it. Play it twice and you'll be hooked. Norma Waterson sounds like she took a smooth, bluesy voice and smoked 60 a day for twenty years - but that's no bad thing. Less predicatble than The Very Thought of You, as she relies less on familair material and more on original, striking pieces, this album is simply hypnotic. Particular gems include God Loves a Drunk, and Rags and Old Iron, but perhaps the theme tune, if there is such a cliche on such an unusual album, is There ain't no sweet man, worth the salt in my tears. For an almost disturbingly androgonus voice, Norma Waterson conveys a sensuality that leaves most reedy folk singers standing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 30 Jan. 2001
This review is from: Norma Waterson (Audio CD)
Norma's voice is amazing, full of character and warmth and this certainly comes through on this album. The first two songs, Black Muddy River, and St. Swithen's Day, are worth the price alone. Absolutely fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought this album on the strength of the covers..., 12 Jan. 2005

of Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson and Jerry Garcia songs...and was not dissapointed. Norma's version of God Loves A Drunk is, in my opinion, better than Richard Thompson's himself!
With a great line-up of backing musicians (including Danny and Richard Thompson) this album is a quietly beautiful folk album comparable with the very best of June Tabor.

5.0 out of 5 stars this nearly won the mercury, 11 July 2014
This review is from: Norma Waterson (Audio CD)
This is quite simply one of the outstanding folk rock records of the last twenty years and up there with anything produced by Richard Thompson , Bert Jansch , John Prine , Christy Moore etc. The band are husband Martin Carthy and daughter Eliza Carthy plus Thompsons Richard and Danny and Roger Swallow . They all play with love and the songs are a great eclectic choice from Jerry Garcia to Elvis Costello to Lal Waterson and beyond . Sublime .

4.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Folk, 29 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Norma Waterson (MP3 Download)
Very traditional folk. For me, the best songs from this collection are those where her backing singer complements Norma's voice.
