This review is from: Brahms / The Piano Trios (Audio CD)
First, you should note that these recordings are available as two single issues in Warner's "Apex" budget reissue label; this just puts the two together at reduced cost. Anyway, Trio Fontenay was around from the 1980s until it folded in 2006. The pianist, Wolf Harden, has several solo releases on Marco Polo and Naxos (I rather like his Schumann). The members of Trio Fontenay were quite young when formed and brought a lot of youthful exuberance to many of the great trio works; this set was recorded between 1987 and 1989 in the famous Teldec Studio in Berlin, so the sonics are good.

Brahms has three "recognised" trios, plus the A major discovered in 1924. All are here in freshly played and demonstrate all of the musical ideas Brahms incorporated into these masterful works. The version of the first trio, Op8, is the revised version from 1889, more condensed than the 1854 original which does rather sprawl.

Warner has re-released most of the records made by Trio Fontenay on Apex and elsewhere; I think they are all pretty good and well-worth collecting.
