5.0 out of 5 stars Very good late recordings
Sviatoslav Richter made these recordings in Holland and Germany in 1991 and 1992. By then he was getting quite old for a pianist - 76 or 77 years old.

He may no longer have been a fiery performer of his early years. But, his performances are masterly. Listening to these recordings, it appears that the great man was still nearly at the peak of his powers...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.
Richter's recorded legacy is variable, and these recordings date from late in his career. In my opinion these are far from Richter on top form. Not everything he recorded is automatically outstanding, so be aware that these are fairly run of the mill performances by his standards.

I particularly like the last three sonatas (Opp.109, 110 & 111). His style is straight-forward, and the notes flow naturally. I feel that his music-making is selfless, serving the composers' intentions.

The digitally-recorded sound is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beethoven with more depth and intensity, 8 April 2008

Richter's performance may not be note-perfect, but who cares if Beethoven sonatas are played with such intensity and profundity? After listening to Richter's uncompromising, risk-taking accounts, performances by those German music expert, Uchida, Brendel, Schiff, Kemp etc, sounds too tame and intellectual.

Love listening to Beethoven sonatas especially when played by a master. Helps me to understand how they should be played.
