I bought this disc in preparation for singing the bass solos in the main work featured here, Schubert's Mass in G, with the ever enterprising Cairo Choral Society. In the event, indisposition meant that I was somewhat disappointed by my own performance, but I am in no way dissatisfied by the items featured on this disc, which is a delight from beginning to end. It was recorded live in 1990, but there is very little to betray this fact. Schubert's Mass is a work of deceptive simplicity, permeated as it is with the spirit of song and it is delightfully performed by the chorus and soloists, of whom the gleaming soprano of Barbara Bonney is a stand-out. The other Schubert works on the disc, the Tantum Ergo in E flat major and his setting of the 23rd Psalm receive equally persuasive performances from Claudio Abbado, choir, soloists and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. For many, the highlight of the disc will be Schumann's Requiem für Mignon, a work of great beauty, exquisitely performed here. This is a lovely disc and my only grouse is that at 45 minutes, it is not terribly good value for money.
