5.0 out of 5 stars what a great western should be
This isn't just a film about the gunfight at the OK Corral, it is a film about the Earps and what became known as the Earp Vendetta Ride. It simply had the misfortunte of being up against another film about Wyatt Earp that starred Kevin Costner in his prime.

Wyatt Earp (19 March 1848 - 19 January 1929) was at various times in his life a gambler, saloon keeper,...

This is a great western movie. Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer is great together.
All of the other actors are fantastic.
The story of Wyatt Earp still capture our minds.

This is a brilliant movie, very Hollywood, but brilliant. The Western genre has always been one of my favourites, and is basically a dying brand..............unfortunately.
Buy this, if you have any interest in the genre, buy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Western with excellent performance from Kilmer, 4 Aug 2013

Released six months before Kevin Costner's much-hyped film titled 'Wyatt Earp', 'TOMBSTONE' is by far the superior and more entertaining film of the two covering the story of Wyatt Earp, his brothers and Doc Holiday, along with the legendary although rather unimpressive, Gunfight at the OK Corral.

The gunfight is, however, handled very well and the other action more than makes up for the two minutes covering this overblown legend. Without doubt the highlight of the film though is Val Kilmer's excellent performance as Doc Holiday, arguably his finest role to date and reason enough alone to watch it.

The film has a good solid all round cast and this is certainly an enjoyable Sunday afternoon film, with few dull moments and plenty of action and shootouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid character piece that remains relatively true to the source material, 11 July 2013
This review is from: Tombstone [DVD] [1993] (DVD)
A long film, with plenty of drawn out tension. Tombstone manages to hit all of the key points from the story and remains pretty accurate throughout, not being afraid to show the less than clean cut nature of the Earps. During the final act there's some larger than life action, but you have to make some concessions to make for a nicely paced movie. Decent for both Western fans and those with only a casual interest in the genre.

Kurt Russell does a solid job as the lead but it's really the supporting cast that make this film worth watching. Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday is possitively mesmerising when he is on screen, and Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton and Michael Biehn all steal the show.

This is a real solid Wild West film at heart, with men who stand tall and move with purpose. Plenty of nice short dialogue scenes build up the rivalry between the two factions so that when thinks finally kick off there's a real sense of the enmity. There's also some nice variety to some of the sets as well with th elikes of an opium den and theatre display providing some pleasing colour to proceedings.

There's no angels or demons in this film, it's not a straight played morality tale, which can make some of the tragedies hard going. But you won't be forgetting these characters any time soon.

Arguably the better of the two films portraying the life and times of Wyatt Earp and his entourage, released within a year of each other, in 1993 and 1994. This is the earlier version, with Kurt Russell as Wyatt, (the other version starred Kevin Costner in the role) and the intense Stephen Lang, as his arch-enemy, Ike Clanton. There is the familiar build-up, with the Earp clan slowly taking control of gambling and saloons, before branching out into law enforcement, to safeguard their interests. The famous real event, The Gunfight at the OK Corral, is featured of course, but it is a long story, and spans most of Earp's life. There are two things that make it special though, and they really do make a difference; not only deciding who made the best `Wyatt Earp' film, but giving this one a place in the Western Hall of Fame. The first is obvious really, the casting. Everyone is completely right for their part, down to the smallest extra, and the list reads like a `who's who' of anyone good, that was around at the time. Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Billy Bob Thornton, Charlton Heston, Jason Priestly; and I could go on. Even Robert Mitchum is there, though unseen, as a narrator. The other thing that makes this film an instant classic, is the standout performance from Val Kilmer, as Doc Holliday. I am not normally a huge fan of Mr. Kilmer, but he proves himself in this film, beyond any doubt. He crams it all in, humour, pathos, style, and class. When he is on screen, you cannot take your eyes off him. You may well have seen it. If so, watch it again.

for me, one of the best Western's ever made. Fabulous performances by all concerned, and Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is a masterclass in acting - a role he never bettered. If you only have two western's in your collection (surely everyone has The Magnificent Seven), this should be the other one
