5.0 out of 5 stars Samsung NC20 is very good
I took delivery of my new NC20 just today, so while I can't say what it's like with extended use I already have a good idea - excellent. What a gorgeous little machine! This is an excellent mix of style and substance with great functionality. The build quality is excellent, very clean lines, very solid.
The initial setup process is very simple - simply charge...

3.0 out of 5 stars Make sure this is what you need
If I'd been able to award 3.5 stars, I would have done. 3 stars seems a little mean, though 4 would be too many.
I've had my Samsung NC20 for about 2 months now, and have used it extensively, including taking it on a 3 week trip to the USA where I used it daily in a variety of environments.
There are plenty of nice things about this machine:...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic laptop, small flaws,
This review is from: Samsung NC20 12.1-inch Mini-Laptop (VIA Nano U2250 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, White) (Electronics)Received my NC20 in 2 days. The laptop looks great and has a fantastic screen, if a little reflective. Dropped windows 7 on it straight away and worked a treat, although had to dig out some of the drivers off the supplied CD to get all key shortcuts back. Now runs perfectly. Screen resolution is much better than most other netbooks. Battery life is wicked.
Couple of small downsides. Weighs slightly more than expected, keypad has a funny layout although typing is ok after a few minutes. Finally the trackpad edge does not work, so need to keep movements to the centre. Corners can be a little uncomfortable, but I have BIG hands.
Would I buy this laptop again.... YES!
3.0 out of 5 stars Poor reliability,
This review is from: Samsung NC20 12.1-inch Mini-Laptop (VIA Nano U2250 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, White) (Electronics)Reviewed after owning two of these. (one NC10 one NC20)
One completely dead after 2.5 years, mainboard failed so not worth repairing.
Disk drive failure after a year, replaced by Samsung
Fractures on the plastic near the screen hinges, not robust enough in that area.
Intermittent screen because of faulty screen cable/connector
On the plus side it's a nice size for travelling
4.0 out of 5 stars Almost...,
This review is from: Samsung NC20 12.1-inch Mini-Laptop (VIA Nano U2250 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, White) (Electronics)This is a smart and well made computer, it has the advantages of a netbook with a good size screen.
- Battery life of over 5~6 hours
- Screen clear and bright (it has a slight blue cast if you're into accurate colour)
- Keyboard is good for real typing
- Performance reasonable for a netbook, it's not a power machine so don't try to edit video
- SD card reader very useful
- Ships with windows xp (Swapped for Ubuntu Linux see below)
- XP fails the suspend / resume when you close the lid
- XP touchpad driver over sensitive get some crazy zooming and clicking
- Glossy screen detracts from what you are looking at in brght conditions
- Battery takes a long time to charge
If you prefer not to use windows then support for Linux is a bit hit and miss. However you can install Ubuntu 9.10, but the installation is not out of the box like many machines. I like the machine so decided to follow the instructions listed here:
This is on the Ubuntu forum where you can find additional support if needed and then you will be enjoying this great machine with some great software.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Laptop Ever,
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent netbook,
4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job,
Use it for writing - Open Univeristy essays, watching DVDs and Music, browsing and streaming - mainly TV programs.
Also occasional use when travelling
Had the Samsung for almost two months and very happy with it - although I upgraded the memory straight away.
Does all the tasks above very well. Good connection to wireless hub.
The CPU often goes to 100% when streaming but the viewing quality is the same as my desktop upstairs.
I have not found the bright screen to be a problem in the conditions I use it.
Keyboard is adequate to do essays and things - I loaded Office 2000 and it works well.
Tracking pad is OK.
Bit of a nuisance about the keyboard layout but now got used to it. Also discovered you can use the spacebar for page down in browsing which I didn't know before.
Bought the LG08 NC20 external DVD drive to go with it and workds well.
There seem to be morepowerful 12.1 inch coming on the market now for about the same price so I won't give it five stars.
