French Alps - hike and ride
on 3 December 2012
I was looking for something to replace my large plastic shell snowshoes which while great on tracks were not really large enough for deep powder snow in the French Alps. The price was very competitive so I expected something okay rather than high quality. No need to worry though these snowshoes are excellent. I tested them in Tignes in the French Alps by hiking up the unopened powder laden early season pistes and snowboarding back down.
The large volume, I got the largest size so they are very big for my UK size 6 feet but they fit no problem, makes trekking up steep pistes very straightforward and the weight spreads out across the snow and stops you sinking in too far. They are very light and for the ride back down I strapped them to my backpack and forgot they were there.
The bindings work really well, although initially looked a bit flimsy. Once I'd adjusted the heel strap, I no longer had to touch it again. It takes seconds to clip in and the straps stay in place. I used walking snow boots and snowboard boots.
I've only used them on deep fresh powder snow at very cold temps (-10C) so I can't comment on how they would perform on packed snow or icy slopes but the steel serrated crampons are pretty sharp. For me though they have performed far better then expected and I'll be using them to walk the dog, hike lines and anything else I can think of in the deep stuff. Now just have to get some better collapsible poles.
