5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BIO!, 19 Sep 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: James Dean - The Movie [2001] (DVD)
To do the great James Dean justice you really have to pick an actor who has the same undifinable star quality and charisma that Jimmy posessed in spades. Guess what James Franco has! This bio would not have worked without this important factor. James Franco is both riveting and moving to watch especially with the scenes with his dad, when he demanded that his father talk to him. I also loved the feel of this film it gives great insight into 1950's film making. James Franco himself a rising superstar obviously has an affinity with Jimmy and looks so much like him, in some scenes you almost thought you were watching Jimmy. I would recommend this as it is an intelligent, extremely well acted take on the greatest ever actor to have graced the screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!, 29 April 2013

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: James Dean - The Movie [2001] (DVD)
This 2001 TV film, expertly directed by Mark Rydell, is an impressive and beautifully acted bio pic which never becomes exploitative and always remains both believable and very moving. The multi-talented James Franco, in his first major role, is astonishing in his consummate portrayal of the talented young Dean who came to such a tragic end. The evocation of both the period and the Hollywood system, is spot on with fascinating scenes at The Actor's Studio and on the sets of East of Eden, Giant and Rebel Without a Cause, which are totally convincing. Simiarly the brief moments when we meet Dean's fellow actors and the studio head Jack Warner, are brilliantly scripted, and acted out by a superb cast. At just over 90 mts the film is perhaps a little too short for its ambitions and I yearned for the powerful story to tell us even more about the charismatic and enigmatic star. That said, it is certainly one of the best movies of it's kind in a genre where success is not usually achieved. The print is not widescreen (TV Ratio) but the transfer is excellent and both audio and video are of high standard. The extras are limited to some classic trailers of Dean's movies of very mixed technical quality. I cannot recommend this award winning film too strongly.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good try, 15 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: James Dean - The Movie [2001] (DVD)
James Dean is too complex to be able to portray him accurately, but this is a good attempt to help the viewer understand the underlying anger and impatience of a mixed-up kid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark Rydell playing Jack Warner is the best thing in this film, 29 July 2013
This review is from: James Dean - The Movie [2001] (DVD)
This excellent, funny and moving film about James Dean is the best film I ever saw that was made for TV. Mark Rydell, who knew Dean and was friends with him when they were both young, struggling actors in New York City in the late 1940s-early 1950s, pays this perfect tribute to his old friend by making this beautiful film. His portrayal of the Warner Bros. studio head Jack Warner, is one of the best I have ever seen in any film, and raised this film to another dimension. Although he is as much an actor as a director, this was the first performance of his I have seen, and I am trying to find others. I had James Dean, part 6 on my repeat list for some time, but found recently that is was deleted 'for conflicting copyright reasons," and now the DVD if the film is not available even on Amazon, probably for the same reasons. Please get your ducks all in a row, studio
nodders, and get this great film back on the Available list ASAP.
