Dark Moody Epic ! This is another beast in the DM catalogue of great albums. Contains many of my personal favourite tracks and in my opionion despite what others say is excellently produced and put together. To open with Barrel of a Gun says it all. Dave Gahan was still recovering from his much publicised ordeal so all credit that they made this album and made it to such a fantastic standard. The 5.1 Mixes and short film are very enjoyable and just add to another fabulous piece of work from the best Band of the last generation. This ends the Trilogy for me of Violator, SOFAD and Ultra. All combine to give a very different scope on the work that DM can produce, and work of outstanding quality at that. Turn it up loud.

Depeche Mode's Ultra is one of my favourite Depeche Mode records ever. The sound is deep and dark, and includes Barrel of a gun!

I think there is a trilogy wich express the state of the art of the band, including Violator, Sounds of Faith and devotion and Ultra (Maybe Black Celebration was a prologue?). Heren you got it in many sound formats... I didn't care about that much, I fully enjoy Hi-Fi Stereo sound. hope you like it too.

Writing the review what is it nearly 15 years since the release of Ultra i have to say the album is superb, has some of my favourite tracks on it, considering all the problems they were having at the time of its release there are excellent, barrel of a gun, home, but 2 tracks are among my all time favourites of depeche mode, they are Freestate and Insight, in my opinion some of depeche modes finest music.

I find listening to Ultra to be an extremely frustrating experience. The songs are (mostly) great, there is a real edge to the sound and the lyrics have real depth.
However, there appears to have been no consideration given to contrast or pacing. By the time Jazz Thieves crawls to its end you really need a face paced, up beat (or as up beat as Depeche Mode ever get) track to liven things up. But what do we get? The drawn out Freestate and the ballad The Bottom Line.

Also, the absence of Alan Wilder means that the complex, immediate arrangements of the previous albums have given way to the more stripped back production of Tim Simenon. Simenon brings a lot to the table: great beats, crystal clear sound. What he doesn't seem to have though is a great pop sensibilty which means songs take an eternity to get going, they don't build on early promise (eg Barrel of a Gun) and they take an age to limp to the finish.

Having said all that however, the songs (always the bedrock of course) are still great and all the album ever needed was a strong edit to cut out the deadwood (aforesaid Jazz Thieves and Freesate, the latter making a decent b-side at a time when the band couldn't conjour up a decent b-side for love nor money) and thus reduce the running time to a more listenable 45-ish minutes.
Then you've got a four star set that has cohesion and doesn't drag. For those downloading and/or with ipods i suggest you do just that.
