5.0 out of 5 stars Benny Green ??? Classic!, 16 Sep 2010

(REAL NAME)
Cut the Cake is a classic album that you would scarcely believe was recorded by a UK band never mind a bunch of (very talented) Scots. It was a fantastic follow up to the White Album and the band at this time were just about to peak. Before they went global and got hairstyles they were just about the finest live band I have ever seen.
Queen of My Soul is still one of my favourite tracks and comes from another great but more laid back album.
The last reviewer mentions Benny Green. Hilarious. This must have been the legend that is Ben E Kings nickname known only to the reviewer.I saw them on tour with Ben E King when this album came out and they were truly magnificent. Not that struck by the album though.
Excellent value for money with 3 albums for the price of one.

Following the death of Robbie McIntosh, the AWB drummer at a party to celebrate the success of their second album in 1974 the band regrouped with Stephen Ferrone on drums, to record Cut the Cake which was released in June 1975.

This is the period that heralded the huge international success of AWB. The title track on Cut the Cake clearly sets out to follow a similar groove to Pick Up The Pieces which remains one of their best known tracks. This album cemented their reputation as a funky white soul band. They had developed out of a strong British jazz crossover scene with bands such as Dick Morrissey's If as an example, however AWB tapped into the emerging soul scene that remained dominant in UK and the US until pink tore up the rule book in the later 70s. Because AWB were so strong internationally they were able to ride out that storm.

The music on these discs is really good and has been beautifully repackaged here. Soul Searching is a fine album too but I have never been that happy with the Benny Green collaboration. Although I like it better now than I did originall I still think that neither AWB or Green are terribly well served on that album, hence 4 rather than 3 stars
